Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, crossing off a line or item on my to-do-list for me is an underappreciated joy in life (Motivation and discipline, Oct. 22, 2025)! Feels even better when it is something that has been on the list for a while. Great reminder to get a few more tasks crossed off. Unfortunately, I often get one crossed off and two more added. Thank you again for daily thought-provoking column!” - Kris

As long as it is two steps forward and one step back, you are making progress. - Shane

“Good column on 10,000. Before reading the 10,000 hour rule, I expected 10,000 swings (Johnston Living Weekly, Oct. 28, 2025). I’ve read a couple of different articles about movements in different sports that discussed 10,000. In those articles, they stated that it generally takes about 10,000 of the new movement before muscle memory occurs and it becomes the new norm. For me, it is the golf swing. But, I can report that it takes far less than the next 10,000 swings before one slips back into the old habits.” - Mike

Good point, Mike. Keep swinging! - Shane

“Great column this morning on gambling and your dad’s lesson (Online gambling concerns, Oct. 27, 2025). Back in my management days, I had an employee whose family life, work life and finances were torpedoed by gambling. His addiction was held in check because there were no opportunities close to central Iowa. Aksarben in Omaha was his closest option. But, once gambling came to Altoona and Tama, he was on his way. He once confessed he won more than $100k in one weekend. But that was gone by the next weekend. It’s too bad he didn’t get to ride with your dad earlier in life.” - Randy

That is sad and unfortunate. Even more sad and unfortunate is how online gambling is multiplying this today, especially with young males. - Shane

Hi, Shane. I have a question. Is trading baseball/football, etc. cards considered gambling (Online gambling concerns, Oct. 27, 2025)? I'd think not, since you're not really losing money. But, I have a relative who buys and sells these cards, spending money that could go for better uses. Would the buying only part be considered OK if the cards he has aren't losing him money, only raising in value?” - James

If that were true, buying or selling anything would be an addiction. But, as I have often stated, too much of any one thing is bad. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Obesity is still in, flatulence is back in

(Vietnam has the lowest female obesity rate and Ethiopia has the lowest rate among men.)

Nestlé, the Swiss maker of Nescafe coffee and Purina pet food, decided to discontinue its participation in the Dairy Methane Action Alliance, following a review of its external organization memberships. “Nestlé remains steadfast in delivering against the objectives in our dairy climate plan and net zero roadmap,” their spokesperson said. This was seen as a big win for the "Let Cows Fart" movement.
