| The Sunday drive
Whatever happened to the Sunday drive? Do you remember those days? Packing up the family for a leisurely spin around town on a Sunday afternoon?
My three siblings and I are all four years apart, so it was rare when we did something together — especially in a car. My Sunday drives were usually just my dad and me, and it often involved ice cream. We would drive around in his Oldsmobile with a couple of vanilla cones, and he would point out what’s new and what’s old and what life was like in his youth. I enjoyed that time with my dad, until my teenage years when doing anything with parents was no longer cool.
I tried to implement the Sunday drive with my wife and kids, but to no avail — not even with ice cream. The only exception was driving to look at Christmas lights with a round of hot chocolate for everyone. So, what changed?
Well, the cost of gasoline in decades prior was miniscule compared to today. Driving around was cheap entertainment then.
Like many people during the time, my parents and grandparents didn’t drive very often. As such, getting in the car and going for the Sunday drive was a treat rather than the tedious taxi-cab service so many parents feel like they are providing today.
We also seem to be in a big hurry now, rushing from one event or activity to another. That wasn’t the case just a few decades ago. The pace was much slower on the weekends, even peaceful. Going 5 mph less than the speed limit now often prompts honking horns, dirty looks and offensive sign language.
A few years ago, I heard a pastor address his thoughts on why fewer people were attending church services. The primary factor, in his opinion, was that youth sports activities are scheduled on Sundays. He may be right. Scheduling anything on Sundays — other than going to church, having your cousins over for dinner, and watching “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” on TV — was considered taboo in years past. Sunday was a time to be spent with faith and family, and that was it.
So with all this in mind, I challenge you to take a page out of the past and venture out on a peaceful Sunday drive. And don’t forget the ice cream.
Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

| Supervisors discuss state audit report, next step for EMS services
By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette
During the regular meeting of the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 19, County Auditor Dani Fink discussed the Fiscal Year 2023 State Audit report that was recently received. She and the supervisors discussed that some recommendations are “repeats” from previous audits, as well as recommendations related to segregation of duties, which Fink says is a challenge in small departments. Fink suggested the supervisors and departments “think outside of the box” to find ways to address recommendations.
The supervisors chose to put the matter onto their Nov. 26 meeting agenda for further discussion.

| Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center school boards ponder full district consolidation
By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette
At the Nov. 18 joint meeting of the Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center school boards, the bulk of the discussion was on the possibility of consolidating the two districts into one. Currently, the districts have a “Whole Grade Sharing” agreement. Board members, principals and Superintendent Josh Rasmussen shared their thoughts.
Rasmussen said if the districts were to pursue consolidation, several basic steps would be involved. First, each district would need to submit a petition with signatures (400 or 20% of registered voters, whichever is fewer). Then the matter would be put to voters. If passed, the soonest that the boards would look to have the potential consolidation go into effect is July 1, 2026.

| | Released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November. Additionally, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship provides a weather summary each week during this time.
“Even as harvest winds down across the state, farmers are still busy completing fall field work as conditions allow,” said Secretary Naig. “Though the rain has temporarily parked some combines and tractors, it has helped green up the cover crops and provided some replenishment for the parched soils and streams. Forecasts through the end of November indicate both seasonal temperatures and precipitation can be expected.”

| More than just books
By Karen Kelly | Special to the Times Vedette
Since I can remember, reading has been one of my most favorite pastimes. I look for any excuse to shut out the world and open a book. Rainy days and snow days are my favorite times to curl up on the couch with a mug of hot tea, a fuzzy blanket, and a book. Despite the recent rains, I have not been able to enjoy such a day for a long time. Adulting seems to interfere with my reading time.
So, I was scrolling through one of those “National Days Calendars” recently — you know, the ones that have all these odd days to celebrate. I’m thinking if we play our cards right, my fellow readers and I might be able to find a day that would work for a readathon before the flurry of holiday activity begins.
