| Guthrie County Supervisors hear plans for opioid funds, discuss employee evaluation process

During the June 3 meeting of the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors, Health Service Director Jotham Arber addressed the supervisors regarding the use of opioid funds from state and national settlements with companies over lawsuits stemming from the opioid crisis. He told of the need for EMS services to have naloxone for use with patients experiencing opioid addiction. Arber also explained Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), in which a patient is given another medication to replace the dangerous drug the patient is addicted to.

The Guthrie County Swim Team held a fundraiser breakfast on Sunday, June 1 at the Guthrie Center Fire Hall. Pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage were served for a free will donation with all funds going to support the swim team.

Art on State classes are held on Wednesdays beginning at 2 p.m. This last week, 17 young artists participated in a Message in the Bottle class.
Art on State is an art gallery created by the Guthrie County Arts Council as an opportunity to bring together the artists of the county, encouraging them in their talents by providing means to display and sell their work and to bring awareness of artistic endeavors to the community at large by presenting performing and visual arts programs. | BOSS Summit offers live music and yoga free to the public

As part of the upcoming Business Owner Summer Summit (BOSS), two events are open to the public. There is no charge to attend these two events.
- On Thursday, June 5 beginning at 6:30 p.m., live music will be offered by Jake Kemble at Twin Vines Winery just west of Panora. Beverages will be available for purchase from Twin Vines. Food trucks will be on hand (Deardorff food truck and Totally Rolled ice cream truck).
- On Friday, June 7, from 7:30-8 a.m., Julie Fulton of Reshape Fitness will lead a lakeside yoga session at The Port.

| Summer events abound

This time of year, there are many options for those looking to get out of the house and have some fun. Here are a few upcoming events in the area.
- On Wednesday, June 4, 5-7 p.m., the Guthrie Center Fire Department will have its annual grill-out event. The drive-thru or dine-in meal includes burgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks. A freewill donation is appreciated.
- On Saturday, June 7, the White Pole Road sales event will be held. Garage sales will be along the 26-mile stretch of White Pole Road that runs through Adair, Casey, Menlo, Stuart and Dexter. The “White Pole Road” Facebook page has more details.
- Guthrie Center citywide garage sales will be Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14.

| ACGC tractor ride welcomes all

| Warren Cultural Center to host free theatre camp July 21-25

Footliters Traveling Playhouse will be back at Greenfield’s Warren Cultural Center to hold a theatre camp for students aged 7-18. The camp is free and will run from July 21 through July 25 (9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) with a free performance of “The School for Spies” on Friday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m. Campers need to bring a sack lunch each day. Deadline for registration is June 30.
Footliters Traveling Playhouse is a touring program of Young Footliters Youth Theatre, one of Iowa’s premiere children’s theatres. Students of all backgrounds, experience levels and training are welcome to attend.

| Panorama FFA Alumni Dinner is June 14 in Yale

The Panorama FFA Alumni Dinner will be held June 14 at the Yale Community Building. Doors open at 5 p.m. with a ribeye steak sandwich dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets are $30/ticket presale and $35/ticket at the door. A table of eight is $200.
A gun raffle will be held — Radical Model RF-15 350 Legend Sig Sauer Tango-MSR 30 mm Scope. Each ticket is $10 or six tickets for $50. Do not need to be present to win.

| Cribbage results from May 30 and June 2

A total of 11 players participated on May 30. Sandy Rumelhart got two 16s and a 20; Dave Richter got two 16s and a 24; Jane Barcus got a 16; and Dan Webb, Rhonda Titus and Allen Pierce each came up with a 20.
A total of nine players participated on June 2. Rhonda Titus got the only 16.
The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library on Mondays at 8 a.m. and at the New Homestead independent living dining hall at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays and at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday. | |

Dolores Marie Beck, oldest of the children of Earl Howard and Harriet Louella (Cameron) Beck, was born Aug. 7, 1933, in Guthrie Center. She passed away Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the New Homestead in Guthrie Center.
Dolores attended the Guthrie Center schools, graduating in 1951. She went on to attend the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls for two years, earning a degree in elementary education.

James Edward Cline, 73, was born to Gerald and Lula (Sloss) Cline at Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center on Dec. 21, 1951. He passed away peacefully at his home in Boone on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
Ed was raised on the family farm at Cline Corner south of Guthrie Center. He was the fourth of six children to Gerald and Lula. Ed was often caught up in mischief, especially with his brothers, but he also developed a strong work ethic early in his life that contributed to his successful career as he grew older.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November. Additionally, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship provides a weather summary each week during this time.
“Planting is nearly complete across the state and most of the corn and soybeans have emerged. Many farmers are now turning their attention to applying crop protection products and baling hay,” Secretary Naig said. “While haze from Canadian wildfires has hung around the last few days, it’s expected to clear by mid-week. The forecast shows much of the state could receive some welcome rain in the week ahead.”

Panorama baseball (2-3) hosted Woodward-Granger (2-5) on Monday, June 2, picking up its second win of the season. Panorama is back on the diamond tonight, Tuesday, June 3, against Madrid (2-2). The Panthers and Tigers split almost evenly in their last 29 matchups dating back to 2009, 15-14 in Panorama’s favor. Panorama has won the last four, which includes two wins last season, 13-7 and 3-2. Panorama closes out the week with a doubleheader against Earlham (2-3) at home on Thursday, June 5.

The Panorama softball team (0-3) lost to Manson-NW Webster (1-2) on Friday, May 30. Emma Walker scored both runs for Panorama and had two stolen bases. Bridgete White had two doubles and one RBI. Andrea Knode spent the entire game on the mound, striking out three batters. Panorama dropped its next game against Woodward-Granger (3-3) on Monday, June 2. Panorama plays four games in the next three days. The Panthers face Madrid (1-4) tonight, June 3. Then, IKM-Manning (2-2) on June 4 and play a double header against Earlham (2-4) on June 5.

ACGC baseball (2-3) picked up two wins since Friday, May 30, when the Chargers defeated Exira-EHK (0-3), 4-0. The second win came on Monday, June 2 at Ogden (3-5).
Game one
ACGC shutout Exira-EHK, picking up its four runs in batches of twos. Two in the third and two in the fifth. Tommy Skram and Taytum Bates scored two runs apiece. Skram’s one hit was a triple; he also had one RBI and stole three bases. Noah Kading provided the team’s other RBI, but his main impact was felt on the mound. In his six innings pitched, Kading struck out 15 batters and only allowed three hits.

After more than 45 years, Tom Neel, former owner of Lake Lumber, is retiring. A celebration in his honor was held May 29 from 3-7 p.m. at Lake Lumber. The community was invited to attend to recognize Neel’s career and contributions to the Panora and Lake Panorama community.
The Neel family has a long history in the lumber business. In 1900, George Neel and Sons purchased a lumberyard in Rippey. One son, Leonard, started Neel Lumber in Grand Junction in 1927. His son, Bob, took over the business in 1954. Bob and Dorothy Neel purchased Lake Lumber in 1977 and continued to operate the Grand Junction location until it closed in 1982.
