| So, how fast will this thing go?
Most of you who are reading this have an Iowa driver’s license and likely took some form of driver’s education class. For many of you, it was a class you took as part of your curriculum in your freshman year of high school.
My driver’s ed teacher was Fritz Nielsen. Fritz passed away a few years ago at age 96, but not without leaving a legacy of lessons for many people like me. I liked him a lot, and, as such, I would kid around with him frequently. Sometimes he would laugh. More often, he would not, at least not openly.
I took driver’s ed in the summer, and I had two good friends as driving partners. Each time when we would go for our drives, and it was my turn in the driver’s seat, I would start by asking Fritz, “So, how fast will this thing go?” Then I would rev up the engine while it was still in park. Fritz never replied but would simply look forward and slowly shake his head, holding back a smile.
I remember when Fritz asked me to back the car up between two poles that were about 50 feet apart. I did what he told me to do — and I placed the car about an inch from one of the poles. Fritz asked me, “How about putting the car in the middle, Goodman?” My polite reply was, “You are going to need to be more specific with your instructions, Mr. Nielsen.” More head-shaking from Fritz.
Another time, we were driving in the pouring rain and stopped to change drivers. I quickly made my way to the driver’s seat while the other guys fumbled around and hesitated to get in. I locked the doors and watched them get soaked while repeatedly trying to open the handles. Fritz made eye contact with me this time and again slowly shook his head in frustration — but I think he was smiling inside.
Even with all the joking around, I did learn a lot in driver’s ed, including a lesson from a segment on “jackrabbit starts.” I recall learning that those who take off quickly end up being at the same stoplight down the road as the person who drove at a rational pace, but the “jackrabbit” only used more gas.
I am not the most patient driver, so this lesson slaps me in the face each time I am in a hurry and end up at a stoplight next to all the cars I hastily passed by — and it punches me in the face when a police officer reminds me of it.
I have a feeling that, when this inevitably happens to me again, Fritz will certainly be smiling from above — and shaking his head in frustration.
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

| Conference realignment shake-ups are happening — with more on the horizon | | | | | | By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette
Conference realignment has become a major topic of conversation over the last few years, both in college and high school athletics. Since 2023, some of the most high-profile Division One conferences saw a major upheaval including the Big 12, the Big 10, the Pac-12 and the SEC.
For many reasons, I loathed these changes. College athletics is largely about pageantry, rivalries and traditions. Sports are an incredible way to tell stories, and college athletics creates them better than most. I will spare you the long rant I could go on about why it’s best to keep these conferences regionally based, but, for this column, I’ll stick to the reason of money.

 | | Panthers’ slow start costs them against Ogden, 15-4 | | | | | | By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette
The Panorama softball team (3-8) hosted Ogden (7-5) on Tuesday June 10. A rough first inning put the Panthers in a hole they were unable to get out of despite performing well the rest of the contest.
“It was a rough start for us tonight,” Head Coach Ismael Galvan said. “We didn’t make some plays that would have gotten us out of the first inning, giving up only a couple runs. After the first inning, it was a 5-4 ball game to the end. The girls kept their heads up and kept battling, never giving in. Proud of the effort and look to hopefully bounce back in our next contest.”

| Where Sputnik sailed over “Shane, I grew up in a ramshackle farmhouse along Old Creamery Road south of Dexter (The front porch, June 10, 2025). My sister and I loved playing on the porch. It's where we watched for Sputnik to sail over, and it's where we enjoyed watching gentle rain while wrapped in blankets. I probably talked about that porch for decades so when we added on to our 1957 brick box in the suburbs, wow, did I get a front porch! My favorite guy listens to the radio there, eats ice cream or watermelon, or talks to a neighbor. Here's to front porches!” – Joy Neal Kidney
The rules are posted “Yes, we have a front porch overlooking Lake Panorama and Boulder Beach (The front porch, June 10, 2025). I always had a front porch growing up as well. We even have an old fashioned swing to sit on for morning coffee or wine at sunset. When we have visitors, we entertain on the porch and have posted rules: Sit, visit, relax.” – Don Berryman
True civilization “I count the front porches as I drive down a street (The front porch, June 10, 2025). True civilization includes a front porch.” – Richard Phelps
A porch transformation Hey, Shane. Your recent column about front porches caught my eye (The front porch, June 10, 2025). My husband and I bought an early 1900s farmhouse just south of Bagley a couple of years ago because we both had dreams of owning an old farmhouse with a front porch. We definitely bought an old farmhouse and have spent the last two years completely transforming it inside and out. It also didn’t have a front porch, so with the help of an architect, we made sure it would have one for years to come. The front porch has been our project priority this summer, and once we get the railing added in the near future, our front porch will be ready for quiet mornings, family time and late-night visitors! We’re looking forward to the completion of this project, especially since it’s the primary reason we ever bought our home!” – Emily Albers | |
