All over the map

When was the last time you unfolded the trusty Rand McNally map and used it to determine how to get from Point A to Point B while in your vehicle? I am guessing it has been a while. Most of us now rely on the GPS maps installed on our phones or in our vehicles. They are quicker, easier and we don't have to figure out how to fold the darn things back together.

Meanwhile, aside from driving, maps can still be handy. Like when you are at an event or conference and need something that shows everywhere you need to be. Or when you are shopping in an area with multiple locations and want to plan your route. And especially when you are on a ski slope and need to make sure you don’t end up on a black diamond when you were expecting a green.

Not too many years ago, my friend Greg suggested we print “one of those spiral-bound book of maps.” In the midst of his 7-minute explanation of what it could be, I finally interrupted him and said, “You mean an atlas?” His response was like one of those Gilda Radner “never mind” looks.

Meanwhile, Steve Peglow, an incredible local artist we work with, found a niche with his unique form of community and development maps. And I have also earned firsthand how residents at Lake Panorama appreciate their wall maps to get a better grasp of the local geography.

Just a few years ago, we were contacted by a chamber of commerce to create a printed community shopping map. We published it, and within weeks they were all gone. The chamber wanted more — and quickly. This printed map was so popular that we decided to do some in other areas, too, and this became a growing segment of our business. We hope to soon publish maps here in Guthrie County, too.

Maybe my friend Greg was onto something, or maybe he was just on something. Either way, I am going to hang on to the trusty Rand McNally in my glove box — just in case.

Enjoy mapping out your week, and, as always, thanks for reading.

Guthrie County Supervisors ask for more information on departmental overtime

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

During the regular meeting of the Guthrie County Supervisors on Feb. 20, Supervisor Mike Dickson asked that the payroll reports approval be considered separately from the other items in the consent agenda.

“I just don’t like all the overtime that’s in the payroll,” said Dickson. “I am going to vote ‘no’ on the payroll reports because I don’t agree with all the overtime in there.”

“One of the things I think we can do, that I would like to see … would be for each department to have an overtime policy,” said Supervisor Maggie Armstrong. “I think it would be beneficial for us, since this is part of our process now, to have an understanding as to what warrants overtime.”

By Miyah Small, eighth-grader, staff writer

In sixth, seventh and eighth grade science, students receive the opportunity to participate in outdoor education. Many students enjoy this because they are able to get out of the classroom with their friends. Students go outside about two or three times each month depending on the weather. Students participated in the bird hike this winter. They observed different birds and noted their findings.

 So Much More Than Books

By Karen Kelly | Special to the Times Vedette

February is the month of Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. Even bigger than these events, February is Library Lovers Month. It is unclear if there is a sponsor of Library Lovers Month, but there are a lot of reasons to be a library lover.

Libraries, contrary to popular fallacies, are not obsolete. In fact, the modern public library is more vital and important than ever before. Libraries have moved from being just a place to borrow books to community hubs.

Chargers fall in semi-finals to Panthers, 65-37

By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette

ACGC (16-6), which ended the year with its highest win total since the 2006-2007 season, lost to Panorama (21-1) in the class 2A region 2 semi-finals.
Kelsey Carlson did her best to keep ACGC in the game against one of the toughest programs in the region. Carlson finished with 16 points and 3 rebounds. Richter added 14 points of her own and added 4 rebounds. Shay Lemke led the game in assists with 6.

Congratulations to all the ACGC players who contributed to one of the best girls basketball seasons in more than a decade.

ACGC plays in class 1A-7 semifinal tonight against Lynnville-Sully

By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette

ACGC (14-8) hopes to keep its season alive against one of the best teams in the state in Lynnville-Sully (22-1) tonight, Feb. 20, at Lincoln High School in Des Moines. While ACGC averages more points per game than Lynnville-Sully, 65.3 to 64.7, the key to victory this season for the Hawks has been defense. Lynnville-Sully only allows a stifling 39 points per game, bringing their average point differential to 25.7.

Chargers to watch:
Jathan South: 15.6 PPG / 3.9 RPG / 2.7 APG
Lance Bunde: 14.0 PPG / 5.4 RPG / 3.1 APG
Noah Kading: 12.0 PPG / 5.0 RPG / 4.5 APG

 'POOR THINGS'

By Michael Woody | Times Vedette

This film is by director Yorgos Lanthimos, who gave us “The Lobster” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” two movies I reluctantly suffered through. His new film, “Poor Things,” has received the same type of praise as those earlier films, and I will respectfully disagree. The cast includes Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo and a brilliant (and Oscar-nominated) Emma Stone in a film that defies description — and that’s not a good thing. It is dark and disturbing but also tries to be funny. Let’s just agree to disagree. Grade: D-

Kim Lubeck’s teenage car lives on.

By Susan Thompson | Lake Panorama Times

More than five years after his death, Kim Lubeck’s dream of restoring a 1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe four-door sedan came true.

Lubeck passed away Sept. 27, 2018, while waterskiing on Lake Panorama. He had been diagnosed with Lyme disease after being bitten by a deer tick. An autopsy stated his death was caused by a sudden cardiac event, with a likely link to Lyme disease.
