Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Good morning. I enjoy your columns (TV show living rooms, Sept. 30, 2025). Thank you. I thought after reading your after school TV memories you might appreciate my ring-tone on my phone — the theme music from ‘Jonny Quest.’ It’s very rare, but when someone hears the tone and knows what it is, I know I’ve found a soulmate.” - Rob

A Jonny Quest ring tone. I love it! Not as much as the “Sanford and Son” ringtone I once had, but I appreciate your creativity. - Shane

“What about the living room where Dick Van Dyke regularly tripped on the foot stool as he walked in (TV show living rooms, Sept. 30, 2025)! Hope he makes it to 100 in December — with no tripping!” - Louise

That’s a good one. It is odd how we find tripping funny — until we are the ones tripping. - Shane

“I have always been able to get lost in a story book (Read, Oct. 14, 2025). Thank you for making me feel this is not just a waste of time.” - Donna

I agree with you, Donna, and with Jim Rohn, who said, “Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.” - Shane

“Given your Great Pumpkin reminiscing (The Great Pumpkin, Oct. 15, 2025), I often find myself quoting and reminding others of the sage pumpkin patch advice of Linus Van Pelt — as relevant today as it was when Charles Schulz first shared it with a more innocent generation: ‘There are three things I’ve learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin.’ ” - Mark

Ah, how true. All we need now is a blanket. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Asian food report
Thailand’s new prime minister announced a $1.4 billion subsidy to all citizens 16 and over. The money can be used shopping or in restaurants to boost businesses troubled by inflationary food prices, particularly rice which is up 40% this year. And yes, it's an election year. (NHK Bangkok)

Japan has been subjected to rampant bear attacks recently. One bear attacked two supermarket employees who interrupted his romp through the sushi and fresh fish sections, the only aisles the bear shops... The Japanese stock market soared 10% immediately after the Liberal Democrat party elected a woman who used to play in a rock band and rides motorcycles as their candidate for prime minister. She is considered the favorite winner and she professes a pro business agenda similar to Margaret Thatcher’s. And, yes, she is a Liberal Democrat. Japan is not like anywhere else. The yen actually strengthened vs. the dollar after her victory, making it likely that Japan will import more U.S. foods, even rice. (American rice is finally legal in Japan. It is cheaper than Japanese rice but considered inferior.) (Newsroom Tokyo)

Washington Post reported on how DC pubs are coping with the government shut down: At Tune Inn, “Gridlock Nachos” and the “Debt Dog” are flying off the menu. Barrel’s has introduced all-day “unhappy hour” specials. Crown & Crow greets visitors with a sign declaring, “If the government won’t serve you, we will.” Its “Executive Dysfunction” menu offers a “Hard Times” cocktail, “Affordable Beer Act” and “Emergency Shot,” all $5.

FOOD DUDE
Whatcha Smokin? — the answer

The art of smoking animal flesh came late to Iowa. The Hawkeye state’s climate produced so much ice that our forebearers built ice houses to preserve our perishable foods. Smoking was a southern thing out of necessity. Before electric refrigeration, preservation required ice, salt or smoking, and salt had limited uses restricted to dried and dehydrated foods.

Smoking in the American south evolved into multiple cultures depending on available proteins and woods. Carolina is richly endowed with pig meat, hickory and oak. Pine and pecan influenced smoking further south and west. Texas raised more cattle and depended on post oak and even mesquite. ...

Costume creations
Residents share how they add their own touches to Halloween garbs.

By Jackie Wilson

When it comes to Halloween, some people like to pull out all the stops. They turn their yards into haunted or cartoon landscapes. It started with a clown costume
Shelley Gudorf of West Des Moines is a crafty person. She has made scrapbooks, holiday decorations and Halloween costumes throughout the years for her family. Although her three sons are grown, she still has the costumes she made more than 25 years ago. ...

OPEC enacts oil embargo. The Arab-dominated Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announces a decision to cut oil exports to the United States and other nations that provided military aid to Israel in the Yom Kippur War of October 1973.
