YOUR NOON-TIME NEWS | TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 2024

The friendly skies?

I am not a big fan of flying in airplanes. I appreciate the time savings, but I could do without the rest of it. Too many people. Too small of a space. And not enough margin for error. I get anxious when flying, and things like COVID don’t help. But like many of you, I do fly a handful of times per year.

The most frustrating part of flying for me is arriving at the gate only to learn my flight has been oversold. You have likely dealt with this. Maybe you gave up your seat for vouchers. Or maybe you were stranded at the airport with no acceptable options.

Imagine this happening in any other industry. You buy a car online and show up at the dealership only to learn that the vehicle you thought you bought was sold to three other people as well. Or you purchase a home from a Realtor and arrive at the closing to learn that your home has two others there who bought it, too. Or, on a smaller level, you stop by to pick up groceries you ordered and are told your milk is no longer available, but the cashier will give you a 25-cent voucher if you come back in a few days.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, this “bumping” or “denied boarding” is not illegal. Airlines are allowed to oversell their scheduled flights “in order to compensate for no-shows.” The DOT site also says some airlines do sell only enough tickets to fill every seat. Would you like to know which airlines those are? I would. Sounds like a great marketing promotion. “We won’t sell your seat to others!”

What if an airline offers to put you on standby on another flight that’s also full? You could be stuck at the terminal for a long time. It happened to me — for two nights at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport. Other Iowans I got to know in the airport who were in the same situation invited me to join them in renting a car and driving back to Des Moines. I respectfully declined, as I trusted the airline would take care of me. Bad choice. The car crowd beat me home.

Let’s say no passengers are willing to voluntarily give up their seat. Then what? Well, the airline will then force some passengers to forfeit their seats based on their check-in times, the fares they paid, or their frequent flyer status, according to the DOT.

Bottom line, if you want to avoid being bumped on a flight, make sure you have a confirmed reservation, you check in to your flight on time, and you arrive at the departure gate on time. And be prepared to rent a car, assuming those are not rented out to multiple people, too.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

During the regular weekly meeting of the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors on April 23, the supervisors met with Sheriff Marty Arganbright for a general update on his department and to discuss departmental policies. Supervisor Mike Dickson asked the status on the department’s SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).

“Well, I guess the question’s coming up about your SOPs that you had. Where are they at, are you getting them updated?” Dickson asked.

“This SOP’s always been available, in my office…it’s always been that way,” Arganbright replied.

Panora City Council approves budget

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

The April 22 Panora City Council meeting included a public hearing for citizens wishing to ask questions or make comments about the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. No citizens were on hand to comment, and the city had received no comments in writing, so the hearing was promptly closed. The council then approved the budget as proposed.

Ismael Galvan (Public Works) addressed the council regarding outdated equipment and outlined his recommendations. He explained that the city’s 1997 Ford street sweeper is essentially obsolete, since the cost of expected repairs is prohibitive.

Panorama’s girls head track and field coach, Greg Thompson, said phenom Jaidyn Sellers has qualified for several events heading into the Drake Relays that begin this Thursday, April 25. She has the “Blue Standard” in the 100-meter dash and the fastest 100 time in the state at 12.11. More impressively, she’s only ran the 100-meter twice this year, as she’s been recovering from an early season hamstring injury. In addition, Sellers qualified for the high jump, which she has only performed in once this season. She cleared 5-4.25 to qualify as the 11th overall jumper.

Panorama took home two medals on the day, a bronze in the 4x100 meter relay and a bronze in the 3000-meter run by Laicey Lutz.

 2024 Senior Trip

By Bjoërg Skovgaard, sophomore, staff writer

The seniors at Panorama High School went to Kansas City for their senior trip. They stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge with a waterpark and lots of fun. But before that, there was a long drive with a quick stop at Starbucks to get the energy back on. The seniors had a great time going down exciting waterslides and swimming with friends. Luckily, the amazing chaperons had ordered pizza for lunch. What should have been a few hours to chill became a shopping trip at a mall close by before going to T-Shots to play golf and eat dinner. There was lots of laughter and lots of fun but, eventually, they had to sleep.

 'Road House'

By Michael C. Woody | Times Vedette

The original “Road House” with the late, great Patrick Swayze is a cheesy, but fun, classic action film. There was humor, charm and romance and absolutely no reason to remake it. Director Doug Liman has given us great action films including “The Bourne Identity,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “Edge of Tomorrow.” Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has made some really good movies as well, including “Nightcrawler,” “Donnie Darko” and “Brokeback Mountain.” How this new version of “Road House” went off the rails this fast and far is a mystery. A stranger (Gyllenhaal) ends up in the Florida Keys where he finds a bar struggling to keep violence at bay. And then the whole damned thing goes so over the top, it is amazing (in a bad way). Uber violent, poorly acted and a complete waste of time. Catch it on Amazon Prime, if you dare. Grade: F
