| The addiction just changed screens
My now-predictable comment when I see people older than me on their smart phones is to say to them, “Damn kids and their phones.” It usually prompts a chuckle. Usually.
The truth is that older generations are spending more time on their phones than ever before. Web surfing. Checking email. Texting. And using social media, among other activities.
Most of them resisted early on, chastising the “kids” who were seemingly glued to their phones 24/7. But this addiction has spread beyond any specific age group. That’s what addictions do. Drinking. Smoking. Drug use. Gambling. None of those are specific to a single generation.
Older generations have been gradually introduced to the addictions of smart phones. Younger generations have not known a life without them and even had their parents taking their photos with smart phones from day one.
That may sound concerning to some of you, at least until you realize that many of us spent more time in front of a television than in front of our parents. I have not known a life without a TV, and I spent way too much time as a child with Oscar the Grouch, Scooby Doo, Gilligan, Barney Rubble, Bruiser Brody and Marcia Brady.
If there is any solace in this truth, it is that I watch very little TV today. Many of you can relate. Unfortunately, the addiction just changed screens.
I have often quoted legendary wrestling coach Al DeLeon, who said, “A little bit of everything is OK. Too much of one thing is bad.” He said that in an age before smart phones, and he was referencing diet choices, but that continues to be some of the best advice ever given. Period.
Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

 | | A wrestler’s mom | | | | | | By Shane Goodman | Times Vedette
Few people can truly understand the emotions of a mother watching her child compete on a wrestling mat, unless you are one — or you have sat next to one.
Being in the bleachers is one thing. Being matside is quite another. We have been fortunate to have Betty Cooper shooting the high school wrestling matches this year, including those of her son, Joel, who wrestled in the state tournament for Panorama High School this past week.
Betty is pictured here giving and receiving a big hug from Joel after his last match at Wells Fargo Arena.
“I made incredible memories that I will always hold dear to me,” Betty told me.
And her photos have provided incredible memories for the wrestlers and fans, too.
Thank you, Betty! | |

 | | No. 5 Chargers face IKM-Manning for district title tomorrow night | | | | | | By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette
No. 5 ACGC (21-2) will face IKM-Manning (12-11) on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Audubon Community School. IKM-Manning will look to its leading scorer, Ben Ramsey, if they hope to pull off the upset. Ramsey is averaging 21.7 points per game. Besides Ramsey, the Wolves’ scoring options are limited. ACGC, on the other hand, has four players averaging double digits: Jathan South at 19.1 ppg, Noah Kading at 14 ppg, Payton Policky at 13.9 ppg and Joe Crawford at 11.9 ppg. These two teams have only played three times since 2010. ACGC came away victorious in the most recent game in 2023, 78-64. ACGC’s current crop of seniors were featured in that game. As sophomores, South scored 14 points, Policky grabbed six rebounds and Kading dished out six assists.

| More than just books
By Karen Kelly | Special to the Times Vedette
Library lovers, while many of you are lovers of fiction, it probably is also good to read up on current events and nonfiction occasionally. For example, you might want to take a few minutes and read a couple of the proposed bills that, if passed, will impact the way our public libraries operate in Iowa.
These bills are presently at the subcommittee stage. HF284 and SF238 are companion bills in the House and the Senate that are focused on taking away Enrich Iowa funding for libraries that pay dues to organizations that engage in advocacy work — such as the Iowa Library Association.

 | | Benton welcomes cardinals — inside and out | | | | | | By Rich Wicks | Guthrie Center Times, February 2025
Donna Benton of Guthrie Center likes to collect things, and one item is particularly meaningful.
“As you can see, I am a collector, and I do like to decorate for the seasons. But the cardinal collection actually started a long time ago. My mom passed away in 1998, and, after that, occasionally my sister and I would share something cardinal, like at Christmas time or whatever. She always said that, if you see a cardinal, that means an angel is near,” Benton said. “So, over the years, I started collecting cardinals from there.”
