FRIDAY, NOV. 29, 2024

Happy Friday to you!

Thanksgiving is now over, and the holiday season is officially upon us. That means a lot of things to a lot of people, but one stands out — it’s time for Christmas music!

The sleigh bells will be jingling. The herald angels will be singing. And most of us will be dreaming of a white Christmas. But how much do we really know about traditional Christmas songs?

Back in 2021, I put together a short online trivia contest for CITYVIEW magazine. At the end of the questions, those who participated were notified of their scores and the correct answers. I wrote the 10 questions and multiple-choice answers, but I haven’t looked at them for three years. I just took the test again, and I only scored 60%. Yikes. Surely, you can do better.

If you don’t want to do the online trivia test, you can try to respond without the multiple-choice answers. Here are the questions:

1. What year was “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” first recorded?

2. What beverage does the singer tell the audience to have a cup of in “A Holly Jolly Christmas”?

3. What movie from popular culture references “Jingle Bell Rock” in the opening scene?

4. Who first recorded the Frank Sinatra hit song, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”?

5. What is the most-published Christmas hymn?

6. What tune does Carol Brady lead the carolers in singing during the 1988 “A Very Brady Movie”?

7. What brings Frosty the Snowman to life in the popular song?

8. In “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” how many reindeer pull Santa’s sleigh?

9. What does Alvin the Chipmunk want in “The Chipmunk Song”?

10. In the song “Mr. Grinch,” what is his brain full of?

I hope you scored better than I did. But, either way, happy holidays — and start singing!

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Iowa’s pheasant hunting is a Thanksgiving tradition

From the Iowa Department of Natural Resources

Pheasant hunting has been as much a part of the Thanksgiving holiday for generations of Iowans, as cranberries and stuffing. And with a weather forecast that will likely put birds in cover, this would be a good year to continue that tradition and get back to the fields.

“It’s a good opportunity for hunters to get out with less competition,” Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), said. “Would also be a good time to invite someone new along and pass along that tradition.”

Panorama starts season with win over Creston, 63-51

By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette

Panorama girls basketball (1-0) played its season debut at home against Creston (2-1) on Tuesday, Nov. 26, winning 63-51. It wasn’t an easy victory for the Panthers, though. Panorama was trailing at the half, 34-28. A strong third quarter where Panorama’s defense held Creston to just six points allowed Panorama to take a four-point lead heading into the fourth. Panorama had its highest-scoring quarter of the game in the fourth with 19, propelling them to the double-digit victory. The Panthers did well in distributing their scoring with four players reaching double figures.

Tojo’s is a landmark in Jamaica

The bar and grille’s moniker is a shortened version of the owner’s name, Tommy Jo.

By Rich Wicks | Panora Times, November 2024

Tojo’s Bar and Grille in Jamaica is a family business, although it hasn’t always been in the family. Owner Tommy Jo Scheuermann explained.

“My parents owned this bar. Mom and Dad had it from 1989 to 1996. Then, in 1996, my dad started getting sick, so Mom decided to get rid of it. They sold it to a couple, and then I took it over in 2000. And then, in 2001, we finally opened,” Scheuermann said. “I’ve been here since 2001. That’s a long time, and there are days that I can feel it.”
