104 vacation days

Many of you remember having days off from school around Easter time. Through the years, most public schools changed the name to “Spring Break” to avoid any religious connections. With snow make-up days being used for some of this time off, family vacations are becoming a bit trickier to plan. For some of you, that causes a problem. For others, it’s no big deal.

When I was a young man working at The Des Moines Register, I was planning a vacation and told Denny, a customer of mine, that I would be off work and explained how I planned to cover the bases. He looked at me with a stern face and said, “Vacation? You don’t work Sundays, do you? That’s 52 days of vacation a year.” He continued, “Wait, you don't work Saturdays either, do you? That’s another 52 days. That’s 104 days of vacation per year. How much vacation do you need?”

I was without words. Denny was having fun with me, but there was also some truth to what he was saying. Some people I know seem to be continually talking about their next vacation, even though they just got back from one. That time off is supposed to make them happy, recharge them, and have them ready to take on the tasks of life again — but it doesn’t seem to do that. They just want more vacation time.

As a teenager, I worked at a local gas station/convenience store that was open 24/7. Even in the 1980s, staffing was a challenge, especially on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. But when the opportunity came to earn time-and-a-half for holiday pay, I was the first to sign up. I enjoyed working those days, as the store traffic was lighter, the customers who stopped in were quite cheery, and I liked the paycheck.

When I worked at the Register, we were told in no uncertain terms that we would not be allowed to take vacation between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those were the newspaper’s busiest times with advertising, and we were to be there to make sure of it. We are not as strict today in our company, but a holiday does mean that we have to complete five days of work in four days. The presses keep running.

Author, entrepreneur, public speaker and Navy veteran Rob Hill, Sr. said, “My goal is to build a life I don’t need a vacation from.” Now that makes sense to me. But like most things in life, I have learned that there truly are different strokes for different folks. Some people love to travel and spend time on a beach; I get sunburned and have two days of diarrhea. Others want to take a week off and ride a bicycle 468 miles across the state in 90-degree weather while sleeping on the ground each night; that’s not my idea of a vacation. And a select few enjoy time at home working on a list of projects and relaxing with friends and family; that’s more my style. But, again, to each his (or her) own.

Regardless of how you plan to spend any vacation time, I hope you enjoy it and will return with enthusiasm, vigor and gusto. The world needs you.

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Guthrie County Supervisors ask for more detail on revenue budgets

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

During the Feb. 22 meeting of the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors, Conservation Director Brad Halterman addressed the supervisors about the proposed 28E agreement with the Iowa DNR regarding the Middle Raccoon River access. The supervisors approved the agreement, pending review by the county attorney.

The bulk of the meeting was a review of budgetary numbers for the upcoming fiscal year. Supervisor Mike Dickson again questioned the revenue numbers for the sheriff’s department, saying the yearly number looks unrealistically large based on the current year-to-date actual revenue.

Paper-shredding truck to be in Panora on May 4

By Susan Thompson | Times Vedette

Spring cleaning time is upon us. Once the April 15 federal tax filing deadline passes, most people are ready to clean out files and discard previous year’s tax returns, along with other papers that accumulate in their home office. Again this year, Panora Public Library to the rescue.

“We like the shredding truck to come after tax time, so people can safely dispose of old documents and tax-related forms,” says Kim Finnegan, director of the Panora Public Library. “This is a service we like to provide to the Lake Panorama, Panora and surrounding communities, because they support us throughout the year.”

ACGC school boards hear reaction to Feb. 3 incident in Ankeny

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

A joint meeting of the school boards of Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center was held at ACGC High School in Guthrie Center on Feb. 21. The board heard an emotional presentation from Kelsey Dinkla, instructor of vocal music and drama. She told of the troubling experience the staff and students faced on Feb. 3 when attending the State Speech Contest in Ankeny.

Dinkla said the ACGC one-act group had originally planned to perform using a script about a school shooting, but because of the recent shooting in Perry, the students agreed to change their plan, which meant learning an entirely new script in the few weeks before the district competition.

Eager paddlers encouraged to wait for warmer water

From the Iowa DNR

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recommends that paddlers wait for consistent warm weather to allow the water temperatures to rise slowly. It could be several weeks before water temperatures are ideal and safe as water and air temperatures continue to change.

“Air temperatures are warmer than normal this year, but the water is still dangerously cold,” said Todd Robertson, Iowa DNR River Programs water trails coordinator. “We have not had enough consistently warm days to raise water temperatures adequately. Cold water shock and hypothermia can set in quickly if you fall into the water at current temperatures.”

ACGC season ends with loss to Lynnville-Sully, 60-46

By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette

ACGC (14-9) saw its post-season run come to an end against Lynnville-Sully (23-1) in the 1A District 13 championship game at Lincoln High School in Des Moines on Feb. 20. The Chargers tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter but couldn’t make it over the hump against a tough Hawks team.

Luckily for ACGC, some of their best talent will be returning next season, as their three leading scorers in this game were all juniors. Noah Kading led the way, with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Jathan South had 12 points and 5 rebounds, and Payton Policky had 9 points and 6 rebounds.

 'SOCIETY OF THE SNOW'

By Michael Woody | Times Vedette

You can find this one on Netflix. It’s a remake of the true and harrowing story of a plane full of rugby players who crash in the Andes mountains. There was a movie titled “Alive” years ago that tackled this same story but not nearly as well. Both movies are good, but this one ramps it up yet tempers itself in certain areas that are controversial. This is well made and enthralling, to say the least. Grade: A-
