Shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations

Who deserves credit for the celebrations that we Americans partake in each Fourth of July? The soldiers of the Revolutionary War? The delegates of the Continental Congress? Our first president, George Washington? Or how about Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and our nation’s third president?

They all deserve recognition for our independence from Britain’s Parliament and King George III, but the primary person to be recognized for the pomp of our Independence Day celebrations is John Adams, a leader of the American Revolution and a Founding Father who served as the second president, and the first vice president, of the United States. Adams regularly corresponded with his wife Abigail, and that is where the planning began. But first, a bit of history and some mildly confusing dates. Follow along.

On July 1, 1776, delegates of the Continental Congress were in Philadelphia to debate whether the 13 original colonies should declare their independence. That night, British ships sailed into New York Harbor, threatening the Continental troops. On July 2, delegates from 12 colonies voted in favor of independence. New York would follow suit on July 9. On July 3, Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America… I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival… It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

OK, so Adams was off on the date. Nobody’s perfect. Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, but most of the delegates didn’t sign it until Aug. 2. And, to be fair, many recognized the declaration’s first public readings on July 8, but the first truly organized celebration was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777.

To give further meaning to the July 4 date, Adams lived to experience exactly 50 years of American independence, dying on July 4, 1826, only five hours after Jefferson’s death on the same day.

Keep these facts in mind and be sure to share them with your friends and family when you view fireworks this year.

Have a fantastic Fourth of July, and thanks for reading.

Guthrie County Supervisors work on EMS map

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

As part of the regular meeting of the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors on July 2, the supervisors continued work on developing a countywide map to show which areas would be covered by each of the three EMS services the county has chosen to work with (Stuart, Adair and Panora). A draft of a map showing color-coded areas to be covered by each of the three EMS services was discussed.

Maggie Armstrong made a motion to approve the preliminary map, so that negotiations could begin, to work on the goal of finding the best coverage plan for certain areas not yet assigned (Jackson and Bear Grove townships). The motion passed 4-1, with Mike Dickson voting against.

 The ‘everything’ store of yesteryear

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

Before today’s mega-stores, there were general stores. In the 1800s and early 1900s, general stores could be counted on to stock nearly every product a person needed, although the vast array of sizes and varieties and flavors we expect nowadays were not available.

On the grounds of the Guthrie County Historical Village, a general store awaits visitors who want to see how different shopping was back in the day. One obvious difference is that shoppers didn’t walk down aisles. Instead, products were displayed behind counters, which meant the clerk would grab what the shopper asked for.

He takes his kite along with him on his travels and, if the weather is right and he has the time, he lets it loose.

By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette

On Wednesday, July 3, Panorama will take its talents away from home to face East Union (4-20). The game was postponed last Friday. The Panthers will look to bounce back against an easier East Union contest. After that, the Panthers will play to keep their season alive in a Class 2A Region 4 matchup against South Central Calhoun (1-16) at home on Monday, July 8.

Writer/Director George Miller extends his Mad Max world to include a prequel to the most recent film (“Fury Road”) with Charlize Theron. In this one, Anya Taylor-Joy (so good in “The Queen’s Gambit”) plays a young version of Theron’s character. Like all the Mad Max films, the action starts almost immediately and doesn’t let up until the film is over. Chris Hemsworth is all but unrecognizable as the leader of the bad guys who endlessly chase this young woman across great spans of desert. This series shows promise. Grade: B

Yale — a fourth of July tradition

The festivities include something for every age and energy level.

By Rich Wicks | Panora Times, June 2024

If you didn’t know that Yale loves the Fourth of July, then you just haven’t been paying attention. Even the large “Yale” sign just west of town has a fireworks theme, a large American flag, and the motto “Not the biggest, but the best.”

In Guthrie County and the surrounding area, the Yale Fourth of July celebration is a longstanding tradition of fun and patriotism. The festivities include something for every age and energy level, from a parade and car show to softball, pickleball and bathtub races. And, of course, an impressive fireworks display as a finale to the festivities.
