Pump up the tires

With the BRR Bicycle Ride last Saturday, many people are thinking about cycling again — and not just the hardcore riders. A bit of warm weather gets most all of us thinking it is springtime, at least until a February blizzard brings us back to reality.

Even so, it does feel like it is bicycle-riding weather, at least that is what my wife, Jolene, tells me. She has been an avid cyclist in years past and wants to get those tires rolling again — and she wants me to join her.

We have the bicycles. We own the gear. We know the paths. But we have differing views of what bicycling is.

I spent most of my childhood on the seat of my bicycles. I rode them to the swimming pool, to the little league games and to my friends’ homes. My bikes were nothing special, but they were my sources of transportation — and freedom — and riding was so easy. Jump on and start pedaling. I still have that mindset.

Jolene, on the other hand, sees bicycling as a form of exercise with many steps to the process. First, she has to dress in the full uniform with spandex shorts, bicycling shirts, gloves and pedal-locking shoes. Then there are the water bottles (yes, plural) that must be filled with just the right amount of ice and water and placed securely in the metal bottle holders (yes, plural). And then she must air up the tires (every time she rides) to the exact pressure. She then adjusts the seat, cleans the biking sunglasses, straps on one of the assortment of helmets (yes, plural), and she is almost ready to go.

And me? I am sitting on my bike patiently waiting for the right time to ask if she is ready. And, of course, there is no right time to ever ask if she is ready. She will tell me when she is ready. After nearly 30 years of marriage, I am still learning.

It may be a few more months, but on the trails we will go. We hope to see you there. If you need water, just ask Jolene. She will have a spare bottle.

Thanks for reading.

Lake Panorama road embargo to be implemented Feb. 12

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

The annual road embargo at Lake Panorama will begin on Monday, Feb. 12. But what exactly is the embargo all about?

That question was posed to Lane Rumelhart, projects manager for the Lake Panorama Association (LPA). He provided the information that follows.

“The term ‘embargo’ is used by LPA as a five-ton weight limit on all LPA roads,” Rumelhart said. “LPA implements this each spring, when roadbeds thaw and become incapable of holding heavy loads. LPA has seal-coated roads. Many members mistake this for asphalt, but seal coat roads are not nearly as strong as asphalt. Moisture works its way up through a seal coat road much easier, similar to a gravel road.”

As other seasons close, hunters turn attention to coyotes

From the Iowa DNR

Coyote hunting moves to center stage for an estimated 10,000 hunters, after most of Iowa’s other hunting seasons have now closed.

Although its season never closes, coyotes, the state’s top predator, are hunted most often during the winter. The coyote population is distributed fairly well across the state with the highest numbers in western Iowa. Coyotes are habitat generalists and can be found near large brush piles, timber and grass fields, and in particular, fields with switchgrass.

Ice fishing shelters must be removed by Feb. 20

From the Iowa DNR

Ice fishing shelters, left unattended, must be removed from state-owned lands and waters, including parking lots and boat ramps by Feb. 20. Ice fishing shelter owners who camp in their shelter can remain on state-owned land past the Feb. 20 deadline if they pay for a campsite in a state park campground. Ice fishing shelter owners are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to get their shelter off the ice. If a shelter falls through the ice, the owner is responsible for getting it out of the lake.

I loved the original movie and was looking forward to what I thought was an update. I was wrong. It is a film version of the award-winning Broadway play. So you know the story, but every once in a while they stop to break into song and dance. It is still a lot of fun, just not quite as much as I was hoping for. Grade: B

Sourdough hobby rises to become new small business

By Susan Thompson | Lake Panorama Times

During the COVID-19 pandemic, increased interest in home baking caused shortages of baker’s yeast in stores. Because sourdough bread is made from the natural occurring yeast and bacteria in flour, the attention of many turned to this bread that doesn’t use commercial yeast.

Sonya Pierce of Panora is a more recent convert to the joys of sourdough baking.

“I began my sourdough journey in October 2023 after watching countless hours of TikTok videos, following many Facebook and Instagram accounts, and doing a lot of my own research on how to make sourdough starter and use it to bake bread,” Pierce says. “I had no idea this ancient way of creating bread was so unique and has such great history behind it.”
