The fine art of finding some peace and quiet

Quiet time. Most of us need it. Some of us desperately need it. And then there are those people who seem to have made it their life's mission to make sure we never get any. You know exactly who I mean.

When I coached wrestling, I constantly reminded our athletes to find their own quiet place. Wrestling is physically exhausting, mentally demanding and emotionally draining. If you spend all your time wound tighter than a headgear strap, something eventually gives. I encouraged them to read a book, play guitar, take a walk, pray, meditate or even take a nap. Whatever helped them relax, I told them to make it a priority and protect it. One thing I did not recommend? Playing video games while blasting heavy metal music loud enough to register on the Richter scale. That may be entertaining, but it is not a recipe for inner peace.

The second part of my advice to those boys was just as important: Avoid people who manufacture unnecessary stress. That might be a friend. A girlfriend. A parent. A coach. A teammate. Whoever it is, if someone constantly leaves you feeling anxious, exhausted or miserable, spend less time around him or her whenever possible. Do it respectfully, but do it. Life already provides enough challenges without volunteering for extra ones.

The older I get, the more I realize that advice was not just for teenage wrestlers. It applies to every one of us. Finding quiet time somehow gets pushed to the bottom of the list. There is grass to mow, dinners to cook, emails to answer, kids to shuttle from one activity to another, appointments to keep and bills to pay. Toss in a few unexpected health issues or home repairs, and suddenly another week has disappeared. No wonder so many people feel like they are running a marathon on a treadmill.

As adults, quiet time looks different for each of us. Maybe it is soaking in a warm bath. Maybe it is enjoying a glass of wine on the deck after sunset. Maybe it is listening to calming music, reading a chapter of a good book or offering a heartfelt prayer of gratitude. My friend Ian swears by lavender spray on his pillow before bed. I laughed when he first told me. Then I tried it. Now I own a bottle, too. Apparently, wisdom sometimes smells like a flower garden.

The point is not what you choose. The point is that you choose something. The world will always compete for your attention. Phones will buzz. Chores will pile up. Someone will always want one more favor. Protect your quiet time anyway. Your mind, your body and everyone who has to live with you will be grateful.

Have a great week, and thanks for reading.

Easy school-night meals

(Feature Impact) Weeknights often feel like a race against the clock. Busy families feel the squeeze from school pickups, homework and social commitments, but dinner remains one of the few opportunities for everyone to slow down, reconnect and share important moments together at the close of a hectic day.

With a little planning and convenient ingredients like Little Potatoes, which come pre-washed, require no peeling and are small enough that they don’t need to be cut, families can spend less time in the kitchen and more time at the table.

For example, The Little Potato Company’s new A Little Homestyle Ranch Microwave Ready Kit is a perfect foundation for this easy, all-in-one Sheet Pan Chicken and Little Potatoes recipe. It’s ideal for busy weeknights as a balanced, flavorful meal that requires just 10 minutes of prep and minimal cleanup. Plus, you can customize with fresh herbs and a squeeze of lemon juice for extra zest.

To find more ways to bring loved ones together at the table throughout the school year, visit LittlePotatoes.com.
