Where’s Babe?

I own a chainsaw, and I like the way it makes me feel. Every man should have a chainsaw. It’s a manly thing. Paul Bunyan-esque, you might say (without the axe).

My choice is a gas chainsaw. 38cc. 16 inch. Automatic gear driven oiler. Starts with one pull. And it stores away in hard plastic case. It’s not the Mack truck of chainsaws, but I like it. And, yes, you need one.

My wife thinks it’s silly. Unnecessary. For the most part, she is right. I have only used it a few times, and I probably could have borrowed my neighbor’s chainsaw or hired someone to cut up the tree limbs, but I didn’t. I got out my chainsaw, and I started sawing.

President Ronald Reagan operated a chainsaw on the Reagan Ranch in the 1980s. He was in his seventies at the time, and he seemed to truly enjoy it. He clearly didn’t need a chainsaw, but he had one and used it. It seemed appropriate for President Reagan. President Trump or President Biden? Not so much.

I have another chainsaw. Kind of. It is an electric version that my dad bought me a few decades ago to trim back a hedge of bushes each fall. It worked great for that task, but it was a bit sluggish for larger projects — and my manly neighbors made fun of it. I still get it out occasionally, when my neighbors aren’t watching.

With the recent heavy snowstorms, I was hoping for an opportunity to dust off my chainsaw and put it to use. I carefully inspected my yard, but not a single limb had dropped. My neighbors’ yards looked clean, too. An opportunity missed.

Even so, I am prepared for the next windstorm, in my flannel shirt, work boots laced up, chainsaw in hand, trying to be manly. All I need is a blue ox.

Thanks for reading.

GCH Trustees approve wage market adjustment for employees

By Rich Wicks |  Times Vedette

The Guthrie County Hospital Board of Trustees held a monthly meeting on Jan. 25, and the trustees discussed possible wage market pay increases for employees.

“We budgeted for raises for employees for their merit raises, which we did in September,” CEO Chris Stipe said. “This is a market raise, and for whatever reason, I wasn’t here during the budget process so I don’t know why, but we did not budget for market raises. Every year, the Iowa Health Association publishes pay rates, and we try to stay with the median rates for our jobs that match up to those.”

Stipe explained that the impact for the remainder of this fiscal year (through June 30) would be just over $69,000. He added that the finance department proposes approval of the increases. The trustees voted unanimously to approve the plan as proposed.

 'Migration'

From the animation folks who bring us those hilarious Minions movies, “Migration” is a story about a Mallard duck family trying to migrate to Jamaica.  PEDAL-IN OFFERS ‘WHEELY’ GOOD FOOD

By Rich Wicks | Panora Times

Around Panora, PJ’s Restaurant was well-known for decades. Although it’s now under different management and sports a new name, the tradition has continued.

Owner Nicole Kidney shared the story of how she took over the business and what she has planned for Pedal-In. Kidney was well aware of the history of PJ’s in Panora. “I had worked at PJ’s for several years,” she said. “I had left and been gone for two years before it came up for auction. The timing was just right, so I bought it.”

Located on Highway 44, right next to the Raccoon River Valley Trail in Panora, PJ’s was a longtime Panora landmark. Kidney didn’t plan any major changes but simply aimed to make sure the building and equipment were ready to reopen.
