| | Pick your seat… carefully
Where you sit may say more about you than you think.
At home, the decision is relatively easy. Most of us have a regular place where we sit at the dinner table or while watching TV. And if someone takes that spot, look out. An Archie Bunker situation might arise. Meathead.
But what about at work, or at church, or at a meeting of some sort? That’s where things get interesting.
According to Psychology Today, sitting in the end seat shows that you are the leader, or that you are in control, or that you might even be there to intimidate. Those are not shockers.
If you are in a middle seat, you may be sending a message that you are a part of the team, that you are approachable, or that you are there to collaborate. Makes sense to me.
Meanwhile, other positions may suggest meanings that are not as obvious. According to Wisestep, the most important tip is to be punctual so you can choose your seat. Then pick the spot with the best view, which means the “safest back area, best sight of windows, doors, other meeting attendees, projection or video screen.” If you are trying to influence someone at the meeting, you should sit “where you can directly view each other and exchange eye contacts.”
The article continues by suggesting you should avoid seats close to windows, as they may become a constant distraction and cause you to miss out on a significant point.
If all this seems like too much to remember, the writers suggests you simply ask the host or the leader of the meeting where you should sit.
I had a boss who was particular about seating arrangements, especially at dinner meetings. He would have it all planned out in advance, being sure to connect the right people with each other. It worked for him.
Another boss was ingenious at picking out seats for himself at conferences or training sessions that were close to the exit doors. If the topics became boring, or if he became stuck with people he didn’t want to be around, he would be able to leave quickly… and quietly.
Bottom line, we can all accomplish more by choosing appropriate seats, and we can learn about others’ motivation by observing how they do, too.

| | Hospital trustees review performance on key goals

During the regular meeting of the Guthrie County Hospital Board of Trustees on June 27, CEO Chris Stipe reviewed the FY23-24 organizational goals and led a discussion about goals for the upcoming year.
Stipe reported that Overall Employee Engagement scores increased but did not meet the goal. He suggested having a goal to continue the improvement for the upcoming year. Stipe reported the progress on several other goals as well.

| | LPA issues boil order

On Wednesday, June 26, the Lake Panorama Association (LPA) issued a boil order for the entire association. This boil order remains in effect. A boil order means water should not be used for drinking or cooking without first being boiled. Users are advised to boil their water for one to two minutes before consumption.
LPA was in the process of repairing a leak in the water distribution system and experienced a major loss of pressure in the system. This loss of pressure requires that the LPA advise all users of a boil order.

The annual Casey Fun Days celebration is rapidly approaching. It is set for Friday and Saturday, July 12-13, with a theme of “Larger than Life.” Stacey Wedemeyer, president of the Casey Service Club, explained that the celebration is a longstanding tradition in Casey and that some new additions have been added to the schedule.
“It’s been going on for many years, as long as I can remember,” Wedemeyer said. “The new stuff that we have going on are food trucks. Friday night, we have Los Altos food truck from Stuart, and we have wine slushies, and we have boys and girls club doing dinner downtown. That’s all happening on Friday night. On Saturday, we have wine slushies again, and we have Chick Fil-A and Kate’s Kookies.”

- Keep a close eye on others, especially children. Assign a designated adult to watch over children, and never assume someone else is watching them. Be close enough to touch the child at all times. Even in ankle deep water, the current can be strong enough to sweep you off your feet and out into deeper water.

| | Increased cover crop cost share available for Iowa farmers

Iowa farmers interested in planting cover crops this fall may be eligible to receive a higher cost share for their efforts. Applications are now open for an incentive offered through the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s Water Quality Initiative.
Through the program, first-time cover crop users are eligible for $30 per acre, and returning cover crop users are eligible for $20 per acre.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for help with its annual wild turkey production survey. During the months of July and August wild turkey sightings are recorded to estimate this year’s nesting rates and nest success.
Participation is easy. Just note the date and county in which the turkey was seen, if it was an adult female or adult male (males have beards on their breast) and if and how many poults (baby turkeys) were present. The survey is available online at www.iowadnr.gov/Hunting/Turkey-Hunting/Wild-Turkey-Survey.

On June 26, a total of eight players participated. The cards did not treat people very well that day. Dave Kading got two 16s, and Robert Klever lucked out with a 17 to win the kitty.
The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library on Mondays at 8 a.m., at the assisted living rec room at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays, and at the Guthrie Center Activity Center at 1 p.m. on Fridays. ACGC baseball (1-20) made the trip to Woodward-Granger (10-12) on Wednesday, June 26. The two teams had only nine hits, but the Hawks made the most of its six. ACGC hits came from Tegan Slaybaugh, Blaize Dorsey and Chase Slaybaugh. Ben Franzeen and Colton Clark split time on the mound. Franzeen pitched four innings, throwing 55 pitches and striking out two batters. Clark pitched two innings, throwing 21 pitches, with one strikeout. The Chargers next game will be away from home on Monday, July 1, against Des Moines Christian (26-2).

On Tuesday, June 25, Panorama baseball (8-15) hosted Interstate 35 (20-6) in a doubleheader. Interstate 35 won the first game, 4-0. Panorama would respond, winning game two, 7-1.
Game 1
The Panthers were blanked in the first leg, 4-0. Interstate 35’s Chase Dixon was dominant on the mound, pitching all seven innings and striking out nine batters while only giving up two hits. Trey Boettcher and Mason Carstens shared the mound for Panorama. Boettcher pitched four innings, striking out four batters. Carstens pitched the remainder of the game, striking out one batter.

Ogden continued to cross the plate, scoring four runs in the next two innings, creating enough of a gap between the two squads to see them to victory. The special event was longest putt on hole No. 6, and Peg Carr was the winner. Karen Eby and Carol Vankirk had the fewest putts with 16.

The shot was witnessed by Lyle Hansen, Jerry Armstrong, and Tim Rickert. Chip also had a low score of one under par 26 and needed only 12 putts. Rich Schumacher made the longest putt. The scramble was won by the team of Trent Crawmer, Jerry Armstrong, John Harre and Jerry Landry with a score of 4 under par. | |

It is difficult to guess what this movie is about if you see the trailer or TV commercials. It’s even more difficult to explain what it is about after you’ve seen it. The movie portrays a young girl going through major life issues. She is also able to see other people’s imaginary friends. That’s all I’m going to tell you, because I really want you to see this movie without too much knowledge about the story. What I can tell you is that it is well done. Two words sum up this theatrical experience: charming and wonderful. I saw this movie with my 34-year-old son, and we both used the word wonderful to describe it. I can’t wait to see it again. “Right now, I’ve got three classics,” Dorr said. “I’ve got my 1979 Chevy pickup, 1978 Ford LTD, and 1979 Dodge Magnum. The LTD has only got 39,000 actual miles.”
