Will the iPhone meet the same demise as the Walkman?

If you had to name a device that defined how people of a specific era listened to music, what would you offer? Today, the options seem endless. Seems like just yesterday when the iPod was invented. Then streaming music. And now smart home devices. But how about past decades?

The jukebox for the 1950s? Albums on console stereos for the 1960s? How about 8-track players for the 1970s? And then there were the 1980s, the era when I attended high school and college. What would you suggest represents music listening habits for that timeframe? Cassette recorders? CD players?

For people of all ages in the 1980s, it was all about the Sony Walkman. That single device changed how we listened to music, and it added an element of “cool” to cassettes. Sony truly was “the one and only.” I vividly remember my first Walkman. Silver metallic. Cassette only. (Who needed radio?) Lightweight headphones. Telescopic case. I listened to my cassettes in that player for countless hours. And when it finally wore out, I bought the yellow Walkman Sports version.

The original Walkman launched in Tokyo in 1979. Ultimately, total production of Walkman units surpassed 200 million globally with more than 300 different Walkman models. But as cassettes became less popular, so did the Walkman, and this seemingly must-have gadget came to an end in 2010.

Will the iPhone meet the same demise? Seems unlikely today, but many of us Walkman users thought the same in the 1980s.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Guthrie County Supervisors question Sheriff Arganbright on budget and spending

“We met with the supervisors, and they said if we could find the money in another line item, that will work,” Arganbright said.

Vultures and goats discussed at Guthrie Center City Council meeting

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

During the regular meeting of the Guthrie Center city council on May 13, the council discussed the ongoing complaints from citizens about turkey vultures roosting in trees within city limits.

City clerk Kris Arrasmith updated the council on what she has found out about the issue, including that the birds are a federally protected species.
However, Arrasmith said it’s possible the city could get a permit to allow up to five turkey vultures to be legally eradicated, and she explained that a dead specimen hung in a tree where the birds have roosted is generally effective in getting them to leave, but she added that it’s unpredictable if the birds would leave town or simply roost elsewhere in town. Arrasmith said she is working on the process of requesting the permit.

Panora City Council approves ‘speed feedback’ signs

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

At the regular meeting of the Panora City Council on May 13, City Administrator Lisa Grossman explained that the city can receive up to three “speed feedback” signs at no initial cost to the city. The solar-powered equipment is expected to cost around $8,000, and the entire initial cost would be covered through a grant program. Police Chief Matt Reising said such feedback signs can be an effective means of addressing speed concerns.

Mayor Curt Thornberry shared DOT data about the average daily number of vehicles heading into and out of town on the main routes, and he said peak numbers during the summer would likely be higher.

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is part of the DAISY Foundation's program to recognize the efforts nurses perform every day. The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Weekly Crop Progress and Condition Report

From the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November. Additionally, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship provides a weather summary each week during this time.

“Planters continue to be parked across much of the state. Widespread wet conditions last week have delayed planting progress and it’s certainly weighing on the minds of farmers,” said Secretary Naig. “We need sunshine and light breeze to get back into the field. Although chances of thunderstorms remain in the forecast, conditions are trending warmer and quieter mid to late week. Once the conditions are right, farmers will get back to planting.”

Panther girls track qualifies for 8 events at state meet

By Cyote Williams | Times Vedette

After a season full of ups and downs, the Panorama girls track and field team will be well represented at the IGHSAU State Track and Field meet at Drake Stadium May 16-18. After a solid performance at the Drake Relays, Jaidyn Sellers will be competing in the high jump, 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes. Kylie Rochholz qualified for the 1500- and 3000-meter runs. The 4x800 relay team comprised of Mary Fett, Laicey Lutz, Maddy Lutz and Rochholz also qualified. And Arilyan Steenblock qualified for discus.

“This is a very exciting way to bring an end to our season,” coach Greg Thompson said. “It was a difficult season with injuries, illness and eligibility issues. Last night (May 9 regional meet) was the closest we had to a full roster, and the girls placed third in the team standings just 19 points from the title — and we didn't enter into two events because we don't enough hurdlers.”

 NHS Induction Ceremony

By Maddy Carstens, junior, staff writer

The Panorama National Honor Society (NHS) held its induction ceremony on May 8 in the Panorama High School auditorium. At this annual ceremony, old and new NHS members walk into the auditorium one by one with a candle. Once members are seated, new incoming members, usually sophomores, sit on the stage. Older members, mostly seniors and some juniors, speak about the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, character and leadership. Superintendent Huebner also gave a speech focused mainly on leadership.

There were eight new NHS members inducted on May 8: Brayden Galvan, Baylyn Herring, Miranda Laabs, Brayden Meinecke, Karleen Ploeger, Ava Thompson, Alexis Wasson and Taylin Woolheater. These members were each called from their seats, one by one, to sign the book and receive a pin for their varsity letter. Seniors of the NHS were also recognized at the ceremony. Afterward, members provided ice cream and toppings for everyone to enjoy. Congrats to the new inductees.

The original 1976 horror film with Gregory Peck is long lost in most moviegoers’ minds, but in this era of filmmakers not being able to generate new ideas, they dip back into past films and, in many cases, like this one, do it poorly. The movie tells the story of a woman in a convent in Italy who seems to get creepier and creepier as the movie goes along. It eventually devolves into a horror mess that was just a little too much for me. OK, maybe a lot too much for me. Grade: D-
