Good morning to you!
Monday, Nov. 2, 2026

A reader recently sent me a list of the most quotable movie characters in history, and it got me thinking about how often we borrow words from Hollywood to express ourselves.

Sometimes, a few words from a movie say exactly what we want to say. Other times, we use them because we think we are funny. And, occasionally, we use them because we can’t remember what we were actually going to say.

Think about it. How many times have you heard people say, “It’s not a tumor,” in their best Arnold Schwarzenegger voice? Or “You can’t handle the truth!” when people disagree with them? And how many times have you heard someone say, “Here’s looking at you, kid,” without having the slightest idea who Rick Blaine was?

Some movie lines have become so familiar that people forget where they came from. Others get repeated so often that we don’t even get them right. For instance, Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz” did not say, “We’re not in Kansas anymore.” Her actual line was, “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” And the famous line from “Jaws” is not “We’re going to need a bigger boat.” Chief Brody actually says, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Other lines are practically impossible to forget. “May the Force be with you.” “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.” “You had me at hello.” And, of course, “I am serious — and don’t call me Shirley.”

The list also reminded me that movie quotes can serve as a kind of shorthand. We can communicate frustration, excitement, sarcasm or disbelief with just a few words. Sometimes, a well-timed movie quote says more than a five-minute explanation.

Of course, the best quotes are not always the famous ones. Sometimes, they are the obscure lines that only you and a friend understand. You repeat them for years, and everyone else in the room just stares at you.

I want to hear from you. What’s your favorite movie quote? Tell me the line, the movie it came from and, if you can, why it sticks with you.

As for me, I can, and often do, recite dozens of famous movie lines, but I will end this column with one most of us know from “The Terminator” movies — “I’ll be back.”

Have a magical Monday, and thanks for reading.

Meet Kara Paulson
Helping students thrive

By Rachel Harrington

Kara Paulson first became interested in a career in education because of her experiences with wonderful teachers as a young student. She vividly and fondly remembers her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Alexander, who she said loved her like a second school mom.

She decided on special education because one of her best friends has special needs, and by advocating for, supporting and including him in everyday activities, she came to realize she wanted to dedicate her time and energy to doing just that every day.

Paulson shared that the many strong women in her life nurtured the idea of leadership, as she knew her passion was putting people first.

She began her teaching career in Chicago with kindergarteners. From there, she moved to Council Bluffs to teach seventh and eighth graders as a special education teacher, focusing on behavior and specializing in math. Though she loved her time with the middle schoolers, Paulson knew her heart was connected to elementary-age kids. She moved to Johnston, where she worked at Wallace Elementary School, teaching kindergarten, second and third graders over the course of the next 13 years. During this time, she was able to teach near her own children, who attended the school. ...
