Good morning to you!
Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026

A few years ago, I bought an industrial building in Guthrie Center with a grand plan. I would move our publishing office from nearby Panora to there, install commercial printing and finishing equipment, and produce several of our company publications in-house.

I had managed a commercial printing operation before, so I understood what I was getting into. Well, at least I understood the printing part. I knew it would require a substantial investment of time and money, but I was ready to give it a shot.

The building certainly had the open space and electrical capacity I needed. Unfortunately, the numbers didn’t cooperate. After running them more times than I care to admit, I put the printing plan on hold.

That left me with a large industrial building in a small town and a new problem: What do I do with all that space? After some research, I decided to try boat and camper storage. With Lake Panorama nearby, a shortage of storage facilities in the area, and a built-in marketing network through our publications, the idea made sense.

I eased into the business with just a handful of units the first year. I even offered customers flexible drop-off and pickup times to accommodate their schedules. The second year brought more customers. Now, in year three, I am full.

Like most things in life, the business turned out to be more complicated than I expected. Sure, my trailer-backing skills have improved considerably, and I am now much more comfortable with an audience when I am maneuvering a boat into a tight spot. More importantly, I have also discovered the beauty of a battery-powered trailer dolly and the importance of maximizing every square inch of floor space. In the storage business, empty space is wasted money, and a few extra feet can make the difference between a smooth afternoon and a 12-point-turning marathon.

My original plan was simple: Set aside a weekend or two each fall for everyone to drop off their boats and campers, then another weekend or two each spring for everyone to pick them up. That sounded great on paper. Unfortunately, customers have jobs, vacations, fishing trips and schedules of their own. What I unintentionally created is a boat-and-camper hotel with a revolving door of check-ins and checkouts. And, naturally, the customer who needs to get out first is the one whose camper is parked behind 12 others.

I do my best to accommodate everyone, and I am fortunate to have understanding, flexible customers. Still, this side gig demands more time and energy than I anticipated, especially during the spring and fall shuffle.

The irony is that I bought the building to make room for a printing business that never got off the ground. Now, the building is full, the customers keep coming, and I spend my spring and fall playing a life-size game of Tetris with boats and campers. I still have not printed a single page in that building. But if you need a pontoon moved from behind 12 campers, I might be your guy.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

FROM AROUND THE WORLD: Israelis await final election results as claim of foreign interference emerges. Israelis on Thursday waited for final election results to confirm what they see taking shape: No majority of parliament seats for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies, or for the array of parties seeking to unseat him, including Arab-led ones. Adding to the uncertainty, the head of the Central Elections Committee asked the Shin Bet intelligence service to investigate alleged foreign interference. The letter dated Wednesday noted alleged funding by “foreign entities against the Israeli interest,” without specifics, and could not speak to the validity of the claims. ... READ MORE

Meet Brianna Mixdorf
Returns to the district that educated her

By T.K. West

Brianna Mixdorf always pictured herself becoming a teacher. She grew up babysitting, playing school and using her little sister as her “student.” Mixdorf earned an undergraduate degree in elementary education from Iowa State University and recently completed a master’s degree in education from Viterbo University. Before joining Waukee schools, she taught third grade at Wallace Elementary School in Johnston.

Although Mixdorf grew up in West Des Moines, she attended Brookview Elementary School as a student. Now, as a third-grade teacher at Brookview, she said it has been special to return to teach in the district where she grew up.

“I was drawn to Waukee because it felt like coming home, and I wanted to help create the same kind of meaningful experiences for my students that I had growing up,” Mixdorf said. ...
