Good morning to you!
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026

Tell someone from another state that you are from Iowa, and the conversation will likely turn to corn, pigs and farming. They may ask if you live on a farm, drive a tractor or know how to milk a cow. Some people think Iowa is one giant cornfield with a few houses, a general store and a tractor dealership. In some parts of Iowa, it is, and I am proud of that, but the truth is more complicated.

According to Iowa State University researchers, 54% of surveyed Iowans had lived on a farm at some point. About 73% regularly visited a farm during childhood, and 64% had close family members or friends who farmed. That is a strong agricultural connection that I, too, have been part of, but it also means plenty of Iowans have never experienced farm life.

Consider the difference between growing up in Des Moines or its suburbs and rural Iowa. A city kid might learn to ride a bicycle on a paved cul-de-sac and spend summers at the swimming pool. A rural kid might learn to drive a pickup before reaching legal driving age and spend summers hauling hay. One knows how to navigate a roundabout. The other can back a trailer into a machine shed without removing a door frame. Both are Iowans. Both have talents.

Farm life teaches lessons that are difficult to learn in a classroom. Work doesn’t wait until you feel like doing it. Hogs don’t check the calendar before needing attention. Crops don’t care about your tee time. And broken machinery during harvest doesn’t magically repair itself.

Farm work builds toughness, patience and determination. Farm kids learn to solve problems, make do with what they have and keep going when the weather, equipment or whatever else refuses to cooperate. You don’t need to shovel manure to appreciate hard work. Although, if you have shoveled manure, you probably appreciate it more. And that Iowa work ethic carries into other professions.

Iowa's agricultural roots run deep, but our identity extends beyond the fields. We have bustling cities, thriving suburbs, small towns, growing businesses and plenty of people who have never sat on a tractor seat. Still, the farm connection matters. It reminds us that success requires showing up, lending a hand and doing the work, especially when a neighbor is in need.

So, the next time some guy assumes every Iowan knows how to drive a tractor, I might egg him on and tell him I live on a farm, even though I don’t. Then I will let him assume I milk cows, too. After all, there is no reason to ruin a perfectly good stereotype.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

FROM KCCI: West Des Moines doctor says harvest season and mold can make allergy symptoms worse. Harvest season can bring increased allergy symptoms as combines churn through crops, according to Dr. Ravinder Agarwal, an allergy specialist with more than three decades of experience at the Allergy, Asthma and Sinus Center in West Des Moines. "This is the time of the year when people become more symptomatic," Agarwal said. With most pollen gone for the season, he said mold is the primary outdoor allergy concern. Dust mites and animal allergens also remain sources of exposure. ... READ MORE
