Good morning to you!
Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026
There are two types of people in this world: those who go to bed wearing socks and those who don’t.

It sounds simple enough. We crawl under our covers, we close our eyes and we go to sleep. But even bedtime comes with a wardrobe controversy.

According to a National Sleep Foundation poll, about 44% of Americans reported wearing socks to bed. That means nearly half of us are tucked in with our toes covered, while the rest of you seemingly believe your feet need to breathe.

People like me who wear socks to bed have our reasons. Keeping our feet warm helps our bodies regulate temperature and can make falling asleep easier. Warming our feet can also help blood vessels dilate, allowing our bodies to release heat and prepare for sleep. Some of us also find socks comforting. We like the cozy feeling, the gentle pressure and the sense that our feet are tucked in for the night.

Others of you find this whole idea horrifying. For you, sleeping in socks is the equivalent of wearing a winter coat to a sauna. You want nothing between your toes and the freedom of the open air. You may even kick off your socks before getting into bed, as though removing them is an essential part of the bedtime ritual.

Of course, there are practical considerations. Those of you with excessively sweaty feet may prefer to go barefoot. And, yes, clean, breathable socks are important, too. Nobody wants to spend eight hours marinating their feet in yesterday's gym socks. That’s not a sleep aid. That’s a science experiment.

Whenever this sock debate comes up, I think of the old nursery rhyme, “Diddle, Diddle Dumpling, My Son John.” The little boy goes to bed with one shoe off and one shoe on. That got me thinking. Maybe there are more than two types of people in this world. Maybe there are three: those who wear socks to bed, those who do not and those who wear only one sock.

I find the one-sock crowd to be especially intriguing. Are they indecisive? Did one foot get cold while the other remained perfectly comfortable? Did they lose a sock somewhere between the laundry room and the bedroom? Or did they simply decide that their feet needed a compromise?

Tonight, when you climb into bed, take a moment to consider where you stand — or, more accurately, where your feet stand. Are you Team Socks, Team Barefoot or Team One Sock? Just remember, whatever your preference, the goal is to get a good night’s sleep. And if you wake up tomorrow with one sock missing, don’t panic. You may have simply rolled over into a whole new category of people.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

FROM KCCI: Early voting begins in Iowa as voters line up to cast ballots. Early voting for the November midterm elections began in Iowa, with voters lining up at election offices across the state to cast their ballots. At the Polk County Election Office on Euclid Avenue in Des Moines, the first voters filled out their ballots, marking the start of a busy day of early voting. Many voters said they were taking advantage of the early voting window because they would be out of town on Election Day, while others expressed a desire for change. ... READ MORE

FROM WHO-TV: Earlham takes out $500K loan as Madison County property tax delays strain budgets. More than a quarter of the way through its fiscal year, the city of Earlham says it has yet to receive any property tax revenue from Madison County, forcing local leaders to take steps to keep the city operating. The town of about 1,200 residents has six full-time employees and a handful of part-time workers. With money running low, city leaders are preparing to take out a $500,000 loan to cover basic operating expenses, a move that could cost taxpayers even more in interest. ... READ MORE

FROM WOI: Former WDM gymnastics coach who recorded young gymnasts undressing sentenced to 90 years in prison. A once prominent youth gymnastics coach was sentenced to 90 years in prison Wednesday for secretly recording his young female students undressing and using the bathroom at a Mississippi gym, in a case that rocked the sport. U.S. District Judge Kristi Johnson gave the maximum sentence possible to Sean Gardner, ordering that he serve 30 years in prison for each of the three federal child pornography production charges to which he pleaded guilty. The sentence likely amounts to life in prison for Gardner, 39. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE WORLD: Questions swirl about pope’s future and what he knew when praying at a French shrine known for cures. When Pope Leo XIV was elected after the pained finale of Pope Francis’ pontificate, there was hope that a younger, healthier pope would be able to guide the Catholic Church for quite some time before age and ailments slowed him. Leo’s lung cancer diagnosis announced Tuesday has thrown a question mark into that scenario and his pontificate. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE NATION: Social Security recipients to get 3.6% cost of living boost, an average of $75 per month. The Social Security Administration projected Wednesday that the annual cost-of-living adjustment for older adults and people with disabilities will go up by 3.6% beginning in 2027, with some recipients complaining that is not enough to offset soaring prices. The adjustment translates to $75 extra per month for the nearly 72 million people who receive monthly Social Security benefits and about 7.3 million beneficiaries who get Supplemental Security Income. ... READ MORE

Iowa Nice report
Iowa Restaurant Association honors Iowa Nice with its Restaurant Neighbor Philanthropy Award. Gerald "Jerry" Hope of the Watering Hole, 34 School St., Carlisle, is this year's winner. IRA President Jessica Dunker said that Jerry won for accumulated acts of good will, particularly fundraisers for victims of house fires and other tragedies. Such events include fish fries, biker bashes and music fests. Even after that award was announced, Watering Hole was in the news again for refusing to close during the water shutdown in that town. Watering Hole switched everything to cans, bottles, paper plates and plastic utensils so the community continued to have a place to gather and help each other.

Corteva won first place in the second annual Food Pantry Sculpture Contest. Corteva’s sculpture was made up of 807 pounds of non-perishable food and personal items, which were donated to the Johnston Partnership food pantry following the contest.

Hagener has now been a teacher for 40 years. She taught K-12 music at Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock for five years, and when she came to Indianola High School in the fall of 1992, she was the only high school vocal instructor. ...

Vikings have all-time defense? We're only five weeks through the 2026 NFL season, but Tom Brady is ready to make a pair of definitive statements: There's a team separating themselves from the rest of the pack and another team is tracking toward having an all-time unit. In the most recent edition of Brady's power rankings, the GOAT proclaimed that the San Francisco 49ers are the team to beat in the NFL following their Week 5 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. So, like every other power ranking, Brady has the 49ers as his top team this week. ... READ MORE
