Good morning to you!

Want to start a great group conversation? Ask people to name the greatest rock ’n’ roll anthems of all time. Then sit back, grab some popcorn and watch friendships crumble. The debate could last an hour, especially if someone mentions a song by a band nobody else likes.

First, though, we need to define an anthem. The formal definitions include a hymn of praise or loyalty or a choral composition with a sacred or moralizing text. That sounds lovely, but nobody is likely to start a mosh pit over a choral composition.

For our purposes, an anthem is a popular song, especially a rock song, that captures the attitudes, emotions or spirit of a particular time or group of people. It is the kind of song that makes you turn up the radio and sing along at the top of your lungs.

Here are my contenders for the rock anthem hall of fame.

“We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions” by Queen. Released in 1977, these two songs became a stadium-sized double punch. Brian May wrote “We Will Rock You” with audience participation in mind. Its famous stomp-stomp-clap rhythm requires no musical talent, expensive instruments or even a sense of rhythm. “We Are the Champions,” written by Freddie Mercury, became an equally enduring victory song. Together, they can make a crowd feel invincible, even if its team just lost by 30 points.

“Born in the U.S.A.” by Bruce Springsteen. Released in 1984, this song features a booming chorus that sounds like a patriotic celebration. But Springsteen's lyrics tell a much darker story about a Vietnam War veteran struggling after returning home. It is a powerful anthem, although some people have mistaken the volume for the message.

“I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Released in 1981, Jett's version of the song became a No. 1 hit and a declaration of rock ’n’ roll independence. The original was recorded by the British band the Arrows in 1975. Jett helped turn it into a fist-pumping classic that makes even folding laundry feel rebellious.

“Rock and Roll All Nite” by Kiss. Released in 1975, this song became the band's signature anthem, celebrating a life devoted to rock ’n’ roll and having a good time. It is essentially a party invitation that never expires. Just remember that the makeup takes time, and somebody has to clean up afterward.

“Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf. This 1968 classic became closely associated with motorcycle culture and the counterculture movement, especially after appearing in the 1969 film “Easy Rider.” The song helped popularize the phrase “heavy metal” in its lyrics. It remains the perfect soundtrack for the open road, even if your wildest adventure is driving to the grocery store without a shopping list.

Of course, this list barely scratches the surface. Daily Umbrella readers, what are your choices? Send me the song that makes you reach for the air guitar and crank up the volume every time.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

FROM KCCI: Central Iowa veterans take emotional Honor Flight trip to Washington, DC, to honor their service. For the first time since 2019, the Central Iowa Honor Flight whisked our veterans away to Washington, D.C., for a long-awaited trip to visit memorials and receive recognition for their service. Marine veteran George Rowe, who served "one year, 2 months and 24 days in Vietnam," shared his excitement for the journey earlier this month. "I keep watching it be flown from other areas. And there is no way I can get to go there, being that I'm wheelchair bound pretty much. And when it comes to Des Moines, that's home," Rowe said. ... READ MORE

FROM WHO-TV: Top takeaways from Iowa’s U.S. Senate Debate between Hinson and Turek. All eyes were on Iowa Tuesday night as two U.S. Senate candidates took the stage for their second and final debate. Republican Congresswoman Ashley Hinson and Democratic State Representative Josh Turek went head-to-head for an hour inside the WHO 13 studio in Des Moines, Iowa. Candidates faced questions on issues important to Iowans, like the state’s increasing cancer rates, health care, Social Security, technology, and more. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE NATION: Roller coaster rider’s death puts spotlight on the safety of ever more thrilling rides. The horrific death of a man who was ejected from a Six Flags roller coaster in Georgia is drawing attention to the safety of amusement park rides that have become increasingly faster and steeper in their quest for the biggest thrill. Even so, deaths on roller coasters are still extremely rare, and Georgia officials have said little about what happened Monday when Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, 42, was thrown from his seat while riding the Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia before striking other patrons and then landing below the ride. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE STATE: North Liberty considers removing Flock cameras. North Liberty is deciding whether to remove its Flock cameras. The cameras were installed without the City Council approving its contract with Flock, the company that supplies them. The process began in 2024, when the City Council unanimously approved the annual city budget, which included installing 12 license plate reading cameras for $40,000. Since then, North Liberty police say Flock’s technology has helped find missing people and stolen vehicles. At Tuesday’s meeting, dozens of people spoke during public comment. All of them spoke against keeping the cameras. ... READ MORE

Woebegone Wednesday
Los Angeles Times recently laid out the latest woes for the wine industry in America: California’s oldest family-run winery has filed for bankruptcy protection. The family behind Gundlach Bundschu, founded in Sonoma County in 1858, said it couldn’t reach an agreement with lenders to restructure its debt, so it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to buy breathing room as it tries to rebuild.

In February, Constellation Brands (Robert Mondavi wines and Modelo and Corona beers) announced plans to lay off 212 workers at its Mission Bell Winery. The publicly traded company hopes this will save $200 million by 2028 and is shifting away from wine to focus more on its growing beer business.

McManis Family Vineyards, founded in 1990, is selling 3,500 acres of property, including a winery facility in Ripon and 10 vineyards ranging from Clarksburg to outside Modesto.

Deimerly keeps things running
Now teaching another generation to do so

By Rachel Harrington

When Jerry Deimerly, 82, moved to Indianola in 2013, he wanted to find a way to dabble in mechanics while generating a small income. He decided to start buying lawnmowers and snowblowers from sellers online and repairing them. He has kept one zero-turn lawnmower for himself and typically sells the others after he fixes them.

“I grew up on a farm in Clarion,” Deimerly said. “My dad couldn’t fix much. If he accidentally cut a cord on something, he threw it under the workbench. When I got married, I took all his broken tools from under the bench and fixed them, and those were most of my first tools.”

He also took shop classes all four years at Clarion High School and enjoyed learning various skills. In 1960, he went on a field trip to John Deere’s Tractor Works, where he toured the foundry and saw where engine blocks were cast. He liked what he saw so much that he convinced his dad to buy him a John Deere 4010 tractor for the farm. ...

He also threw the hardest fastball of his career, clocking in at 99.4 mph. ... READ MORE

FROM FOX SPORTS: Could Cowboys' defense be worse? Opponents sense vulnerability. It didn't seem like the Dallas Cowboys' defense could play any worse than they did in 2025. 1968: Military announces it will send U.S. servicemen to Vietnam for second tours. U.S. Defense Department officials announce that the Army and Marines will be sending about 24,000 men back to Vietnam for involuntary second tours because of the length of the war, high turnover of personnel resulting from the one year of duty, and the tight supply of experienced soldiers. This decision had an extremely negative impact on troop morale and the combat readiness of U.S. forces elsewhere in the world as troops were transferred to meet the increased personnel requirements in Vietnam. … READ MORE
