Good morning to you!
Monday, Oct. 5, 2026
There is a reason it is called work. I know. It’s a brilliant observation. Somewhere, Larry Winget is nodding his head.

Winget, the author of “It’s Called Work for a Reason,” has made a career out of telling people things they already know but don’t want to hear. His basic message is, if you want the rewards that come from work, you actually have to work. What a concept.

We live in a world that seems increasingly fascinated with shortcuts. We want to lose weight without exercising, get rich without saving, become successful without failing and have a clean house without putting anything away.

We also seem to have developed an expectation that work should always be fun. If it isn’t fun, we are told we should find something else to do. I’m not buying it.
Work isn’t always supposed to be fun. Sometimes it is just supposed to get done.

There are days when you wake up excited about what you are doing. There are other days when the alarm goes off, and your first thought is that you should fake your own disappearance. That doesn’t mean you hate your job. It means you are human.

Every job has boring parts. Every business has frustrating customers, difficult employees, broken equipment, missed deadlines, unexpected expenses and way-too-long meetings.

The difference between people who accomplish things and those who continually talk about accomplishing things often comes down to who shows up and does the work. Talent helps. Education helps. Connections help. Luck certainly helps. But none of those things can replace effort.

My dad would often say that nothing worthwhile comes easy. I am sure someone else said it before him, but I heard it from his mouth enough times that I eventually determined he must have been right.

The frustrating thing about work is that the payoff is not always immediate. We may work for months before seeing results. We may plant something today that someone else enjoys years from now. We may put in countless hours building something that looks, from the outside, like it happened overnight. It didn’t. Somebody worked.

That’s why I like the title of Winget’s book. It is blunt, practical and likely irritating to those looking for a life hack that takes less time than reading this column.

There are no magic shortcuts. Want something? Work for it. Want to get better? Practice. Want to build something? Start. Want to succeed? Keep going when the excitement wears off. Because it’s not called “easy.” It’s not called “convenient.” It’s not called “overnight.” It’s called “work.” For a reason.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

The Eggroll Ladies took inventory last week of their summer season with two food trailers: 61,380 eggrolls, 54,710 crab Rangoons — all hand rolled by owner Trang Pham and her two aunties. That's 116,090 items since Memorial Day. Trang said she exists on four hours sleep, often less. A pint with a purpose
Local blood donors roll up their sleeves to help save lives.

By Rachel Harrington

A single blood donation takes only a short amount of time, but its impact can last much longer. Across generations, families and individuals continue to donate blood because they know their contribution could help someone they may never meet. It could even save a life. For some local donors, that simple act has become a lasting commitment to helping others.

Helping others
David Sande began donating blood as a young adult. His first donation was in 2003 when a co-worker participated in a workplace blood drive and encouraged Sande to join him. Sande later participated in several more blood drives.

His wife, Nanci, began donating blood in the early 2000s. Her son was involved with a blood drive at his high school, and she joined in. Now, both regularly donate at the Urbandale LifeServe Blood Center.

David decided to become a blood donor because he felt it was simply a good thing to do and a way to help others. Besides, he said, it was not difficult. ...

FROM ESPN: Braves lean on Kerr, Fuentes in lieu of Sale, win NLDS Game 2. When spring training began and the Atlanta Braves reconvened, Ray Kerr was a minor league journeyman in the midst of a prolonged recovery from Tommy John surgery, and Didier Fuentes was a 20-year-old phenom with little chance of cracking the major league roster. Eight months later, in Game 2 of the National League Division Series, the two combined for 19 of the Braves' 27 outs in an improbable 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, earning them a split on the road with Chris Sale on tap to start Game 3 in Atlanta. ... READ MORE

It was battered and embarrassed. ... READ MORE
