Good morning to you!
Friday, Oct. 2, 2026

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, you showed a valuable insight with your column describing how the first step to changing or improving behavior is awareness (Awareness, Sept. 28, 2026). It's hard to see that people who point out our faults and shortcomings are actually doing us a favor, if they do it positively and constructively. It reminds me of a Peanuts comic strip where Lucy is handing out lists of the faults of the other characters. Her motives, however, are selfish. She believes that if the others change and improve, it will make her life easier. The list she hands to Linus is long enough to reach the floor! He yells after her, ‘These aren't faults, they're character traits!’ ” - Bob

Charles Schulz certainly had a way of presenting life’s struggles and make us smile. Thanks for the reminder, Bob. - Shane

“I know what good habit I need to do more of (Awareness, Sept. 28, 2026). I need to be sure to read The Daily Umbrella each and every morning.” - Bill

The check is in the mail, Bill. - Shane

“Wow. Great ideas I have never thought about (Pool noodles, Sept. 29, 2026).” - Pat

Very few of us do actually think about pool noodles — until we have to move them 14 times in the garage to get to what we are trying to find. - Shane

“Shane, I have cut noodles to put between the consoles and seats of my cars to avoid losing things that fall into those spaces (Pool noodles, Sept. 29, 2026). Also, would you ask your readers what sounds they miss, like the crack of a baseball being hit by a wooden bat and not the ‘donk’ of an aluminum bat. Thanks, my friend.” - James

Good idea on the pool noodle. Your solution adds a bit of color for the interior of the Chrysler, too. As far as the sounds we miss, let me noodle that a bit. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

How the times are changing...
• In 1999, traditional grocers made up 72.2% of Americans' food spending. By 2025, that fell to 56.2%. Warehouse clubs and supercenters grew their share from 9.4% to 26.4% during that period. Convenience stores captured the rest of market. (USDA)

• U.S. Department of Labor stats say Americans are spending 34% more time preparing meals than they spent 20 years ago. The average dinner now takes 43 minutes of prep time.

• Vaping is losing customers to old fashioned smoking. (Fox Business)

• For the first time this century, malls are coming back. Young people are reviving interest in them after decades of forsaking them for online shopping. Their real estate value rose for the first time, too. (WSJ)

• Candy sales were down at convenience stores 7.4% the first half of 2026 compared to a year ago. (CSNews)

Two years ago, Marci and Darrell Bailey began a home improvement project that would create a gathering space suitable for their extended family. The Baileys have four children and six grandchildren, and most of them live nearby, so their home is the destination for family get-togethers.

“We wanted a place that everyone could gather, so changes we made were centered around entertaining friends and family,” Marci said. ...
