Good morning to you!
Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Thanks for the awesome memory from when I was a kid (Tractor tire sandbox, Sept. 22, 2026). And the times we played in the local creek, took over the side street off the backyard of a friend's house as the outfield for our whiffle ball field, and used the gas front yard light post (you know, those black ones with the four sides, as a pick to rub off a defender in a game of three-man football. We're all still alive five decades later.” - Brad

I was blocked by a few of those gas light posts, too. - Shane

“I was in a nonprofit charitable organization in Hampton, Iowa, in the 1970s (Tractor tire sandbox, Sept. 22, 2026). One of our fundraising activities was to deliver tractor tires and sand to backyards for a modest fee. I do not take any responsibility for the possible alleged environmental damage those tires may have done to the environment, nor will I disclose the name of the organization. They taught kids how to think up games without the help (?) of today's current technology.” - George

One has to wonder, does anyone deliver sand for sandboxes today? - Shane

“Your column regarding a big tractor tire sand box brought back a lot of memories, including this picture which was taken around 1958 or so near Forest City (Tractor tire sandbox, Sept. 22, 2026). That's me in the middle with my cousin Jerry on the left and my cousin Doug on the right, mugging for the camera. It was their tractor tire, but I had one just like it at my place. Please note that each of us has his own bottle of 7-Up, courtesy of my aunt Arlene. That was unheard of. Grandma or my Mom would have divided the bottle among the three of us!”- Bob

Soda pop was unheard of in our home, too. If we had something other than water or milk, it was Kool-Aid. “Oh, yeah!” - Shane

“Shane, I feel your pain (Shorts or pants, Sept. 23,2026)! And even when you make the right choice for the outside weather, you have to be prepared for the wide range of indoor weather in stores and restaurants. I never leave the house in the spring/summer without a hoodie or sweater, or in the fall/winter without removable layers. It's either arctic and over-air-conditioned or heated like the tropics. How about these businesses cut back a bit on energy consumption, save money (and the environment) and lower their prices!” - Debbie

Well, I guess we wouldn’t have many conversation-starters if we all enjoyed the same temperatures. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Iowa Nice report
The World Food Prize Foundation is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for most hunger relief meals packaged in one hour during the Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue on Oct. 20 at the EMC Expo Center. Working with Meals from the Heartland, organizers hope to rally more than 1,000 volunteers to package 600,000 meals in one hour, surpassing the current record of 530,064. Half the meals will stay in Iowa and half will go to eight countries around the world.

Prairie Meadows awarded $275,000 to the WesleyLife Foundation across three initiatives serving older adults in central Iowa. The largest share, $200,000, supports the $49.5 million redevelopment of The Village in Indianola, while $65,000 goes to WesleyLife Meals on Wheels and $10,000 to WesleyLife Hospice. Meals on Wheels delivered more than 416,000 meals in 2025, and the hospice program served nearly 650 people across the region.

Wallace Farm harvested 667 pounds of peaches, 473 pounds of apples, and 93 pounds of pears this summer. Much of the harvest is making its way into Iowa communities. The farm sent peaches to food pantries in Greenfield, Orient and Earlham, while the Food Bank of Iowa distributed the apples through its network of pantries. Volunteers from Corteva and MidAmerican Energy picked hundreds of pounds of apples.

From dream to reality
Residents reimagine their homes to fit their lives.

By Sean Dengler

Home improvement projects are often about much more than a few repairs, fresh paint and new appliances. They are about creating living spaces that fit the owners’ needs, style and desire for a home that is “just right.” Residents share how their renovations made their dreams into a reality.

“It needed updated, and it was not very functional,” Geri said. “That’s why we decided to do it.”
Having an abnormally large tub did not help the situation.
