Good morning to you!

There was a time when buying a toothbrush required about 10 seconds of my life. I walked into the store, grabbed the one that cost about a dollar, paid for it and went home. Decision made.

Today? Buying a toothbrush feels like shopping for a new vehicle. Do you want soft, extra soft, ultra soft or dentist-recommended soft? Angled bristles? Multi-level bristles? Cross-action bristles? Charcoal-infused bristles? A flexible neck? A rubber grip? A tongue scraper? A vibrating handle? Bluetooth connectivity? I fully expect next year's models to include GPS and heated seats.

Growing up, none of those choices existed in our house. My mother bought whatever toothbrushes were the cheapest. They had plain white handles, one stripe of color so my siblings and I could tell whose was whose, and bristles that looked like they had been cut with hedge clippers. They were not glamorous, but they scrubbed teeth just fine. As kids, we never questioned them. We were simply happy if we got our favorite color.

Somewhere along the way, toothbrushes became status symbols. Advertisements now promise a brighter smile, healthier gums and, apparently, a more fulfilling life if only you buy the premium model with scientifically engineered bristle geometry.

I remain skeptical. I have a feeling dentists are less concerned about which toothbrush you buy than whether you actually use one or not. A fancy toothbrush that spends most of its life sitting on the bathroom counter still loses to a cheap one that gets two minutes of honest work twice a day. Technique matters. Time matters. Reaching every tooth matters. You can own the world's greatest brush, but if you spend 18 seconds randomly poking at your molars before calling it good, you are not fooling anybody.

That’s not to say every inexpensive toothbrush has been perfect. Years ago, I had one with bristles that began falling out while I was brushing. I spent the next several minutes pulling loose bristles from my tongue and wondering whether I should floss my esophagus just to be safe. Needless to say, that particular brush earned an early retirement.

I must admit, though, I have fallen prey to today’s technological toothbrushes. I have grown to appreciate my electric toothbrush, as well as the water flosser my dental hygienist convinced me to buy. But, I am also old school, and I keep a simple toothbrush around along with a few spares. Quite often, the simplest tools really are the best — if you use them. Because, as the old saying goes, ignore your teeth and they will go away.

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Today is the final day for Table 128. The restaurant was brilliant but hurt by operation interruptions including divorce, COVID and a move from Clive to MLK downtown that didn't draw enough support to justify the overhead. Super chef/owner Lynn Pritchard will focus on his wood-oven centric Hugo's.

Beans & Beignets in Earlham will close permanently Aug. 2. They made baked goods as marvelous as any anywhere, and Iowa will lose a true conjurer of magic. They will continue their mobile operation.

In backyards across the community, simple ideas are turning into unforgettable childhood spaces. Whether perched in a towering tree or built at ground level, these play areas invite creativity, independence and hours of outdoor fun.

A playset built to grow with the family
Joy often arrives with a new playset.

The Ashbacher family recently purchased a playset from Backyard Adventures for their two young children.
"Our daughter is just at the age where she can do all the things on a play set," Bailey Ashbacher says of her 2-year-old daughter. The family wanted something their children could enjoy for years to come and found a great fit.

The Ashbachers visited the business to try the playsets in the showroom before making their decision. ...
