Good morning to you!

Singer and songwriter John Mellencamp famously declared he was "born in a small town." The town? Seymour, Indiana, with a population of about 22,500. Small town? Not by Iowa standards.

About 25 Iowa cities have more people than Seymour. Communities such as Fort Dodge, Johnston, Clinton, Burlington and Muscatine are all in that same neighborhood population-wise. Nobody in Iowa looks at those places and says,

"What a quaint little, small town." Then again, Iowa plays by its own rules.

State law designates every incorporated community as a city, whether it has 200,000 residents or 200. That means Iowa has 943 official cities, ranging from Des Moines to places where you can accidentally drive through downtown while reaching for your coffee.

Official definitions are one thing. Real-life definitions are another. Most Iowans know a small town when they see one, and population is only part of the equation. Consider this highly scientific checklist.

School class size. If everyone in your graduating class could fit around one large restaurant table, you probably grew up in a small town. Bonus points if everyone also happened to be cousins.

Stoplights. If your town has no stoplights, you are definitely in the conversation. One stoplight? Still small. Two? You are getting ambitious.

Casey's. If the Casey's clerk knows your breakfast pizza order before you walk through the door, congratulations. You have achieved peak small-town status.

Law enforcement. If there is a police officer, he or she likely also coaches youth baseball, serves on the volunteer fire department and knows exactly whose dog is running loose.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, roughly one-third of Iowans live in communities with fewer than 10,000 residents. Thousands more live in unincorporated areas or on farms. Small-town life is not some nostalgic idea in Iowa. It is everyday life for a significant share of the state's population.

Small towns are where everybody knows your parents, remembers what you drove in high school and notices if you get a haircut before your own family does. Privacy is limited, but casseroles arrive quickly when someone is sick, and volunteers somehow appear whenever there is work to be done.

John Mellencamp may have been born in what he calls a small town. Good for him. But in Iowa, a small town is not measured by census numbers alone. It is measured by familiar faces, Friday night lights, the smell of fresh pizza at Casey's and the comforting certainty that people will wave at you, even if they have no idea who you are.

“And that’s good enough… for me.”

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading (and listening).

JOE'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Cold plunges and daughters

By Joe Weeg

“Dad, you’ll love the sauna. And then we’ll do the cold plunge.”

She smiles at me and nods up and down waiting for me to mirror her.

Yup, that’s how you talk to your ancient dad: slow with lots of nodding and guidance.

And, if you didn’t know, a “cold plunge” is exactly that — a dunk in frigid water. Now doesn’t that sell itself?

So, “no” to the cold plunge. ...
