Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, your column describing how our memory plays tricks on us was amusing but hit a little close to home (Memory, June 29, 2026). My favorite example is when I go grocery shopping and proceed through the checkout line. The cashier always asks if I found everything I need. I always reply, ‘If I can remember it, I can find it.’ Using a shopping list helps, but only if you remember to add everything you need to the list. That doesn't always happen.” - Bob

That’s so true. Let me write that down. - Shane

“As a lover of summer, I'm with you, Shane (Summer is slipping away, June 30, 2026). Time to make the most of it every day.” - Brad

I am not sure what roses are supposed to smell like, but I keep smelling them. - Shane

“Amazing, I had not heard that term either (Gate lice, July 3, 2026). The other option was when airlines began loading the airplane from the rear forward. Logistically it made all the sense in the world. Got people down the aisle quickly, greatly reduced the time to load, but the people began putting their bags in the front of the plane and then walking back to avoid having to carry heavy bags back up the aisle. The people up front raised heck and the short-lived practical plan died a quick existence. Oh, the joys of travel.” - Rick

What is amazing to me is that something as simple as loading people on an airplane can be so complicated. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. A few years ago, I purchased a very inexpensive set of earbuds (less than $30) which have, so far, been worth every penny of their price (Big headphones, July 6, 2026). In the last few weeks, I've been looking for an alternative that would be cord-free and didn’t cover my ears, as I work outside. I want to hear danger approaching such as the HOA mowers, but, most importantly, I want to hear my wife's voice. A Father's Day gift card inspired me to buy a bone induction model. So far, they work just fine, as I discovered that listening to YouTube videos allows me to arrange music to my taste. I'll try your podcasts next.” - John

Bone induction? Sounds like a T-bone steak — or how to order buffalo wings. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

When Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire District crews launched their boat, they faced several unknowns: how long the woman had been in the water, how much longer she could hold on, and whether the branch supporting her would give way. ... Plastic news
Plastic packaging is threatening another fresh food in Des Moines supermarkets. My local Fareway has not stocked a head of romaine lettuce for weeks. Not even a package of romaine hearts. They have expanded their large plastic salad selection to carry some romaine in many combos, none of which retain crispness or color as long as simple heads of the lettuce. Last month at my local Price Chopper, a package of three hearts of romaine cost $12, up from $3 the last time I bought such there. There is a new plastic-packed product called Hydroponic Romaine, but it does not resemble establishment Romaine at all — no crispness, none. It was more like butter leaf but more expensive.

Whatever movement there ever was to reduce the bulk of plastic packaging in America has stalled. All berries sold in DSM supermarkets are packed in bulky, hard to break down plastic containers with plastic lids that are bulky — to what purpose? To paraphrase a popular meme, first they come for the berries, then the leafy greens.

This goes on at the same time that food processing is discouraged. Without MAHA moms, I suspect they would be adding preservatives and processed sugar substitutes to the packaged salads.

FILM REVIEW
Back to the toy box — and worth the trip

By David Rowley

“Toy Story 5”
PG | 1h 42m
Directors: McKenna Harris, Andrew Stanton
Writers: Andrew Stanton, McKenna Harris
Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack

When Pixar announced “Toy Story 5,” split feelings could be felt amongst the Millennials who grew up alongside Andy’s plastic companions. “Toy Story 3” (2010) was perfect. A tear-jerking trilogy closer that made adults ugly cry more than their kids. We watched as our beloved friends accepted the inevitable over an incinerator and a final childhood goodbye. While 2019’s “Toy Story 4” seemed unnecessary, it still managed to deliver a delightfully emotional send-off for Woody. Going into the theater, the burning question wasn’t whether Pixar COULD find value in their favorite toys-turned-collectables, but whether they SHOULD justify reopening the toy box a fifth time. ...
