Good morning to you!
"Get bigger or get beaten."

Those words came from former General Electric Chairman and CEO Jack Welch, who led the company from 1981 to 2001. I read several of his books over the years, and his message stuck with me: Growth is not an option in business. It is a necessity.

I have been the publisher of CITYVIEW magazine for 22 years after purchasing the publication in 2004 from founder Connie Wimer. At the time, CITYVIEW was a weekly publication printed on standard newsprint, typically running about 20-some pages, with most pages in black and white.

Meanwhile, we were publishing a similar publication called Pointblank, a financially disappointing venture that created more headaches than profits. Combining the two under the CITYVIEW name made sense from nearly every angle. Since then, competitors have entered the market and quietly disappeared, but CITYVIEW has continued to grow.

Today, CITYVIEW is a monthly publication printed on heavier newsprint with a glossy cover and exceeds 80 pages. Its print readership is at an all-time high, and when combined with its digital audience, CITYVIEW reaches more than 100,000 central Iowans each month. That success did not happen overnight. It took years of hard work, countless adjustments and a willingness to embrace change. Looking back, I am proud of what CITYVIEW has become.

Still, the reality is that CITYVIEW could not thrive as a standalone publication. We used it as the foundation for launching additional publications, expanding our digital offerings and creating community events. In short, we got bigger.

That growth has allowed us to serve a wider range of readers, advertisers and communities. As I have often said, McDonald's cannot survive by selling only cheeseburgers. Likewise, a publishing company cannot rely on a single product. Diversification is not simply a strategy. It is a necessity.

Today, our CITYVIEW division includes five publications and their digital counterparts. Alongside CITYVIEW, we publish SENIORVIEW, our successful publication for readers 55 and older; RELISH DM, our longtime food and dining publication; EXPLORE DM, a guide to local activities and entertainment; and HOMEVIEW, which focuses on homes, remodeling and real estate.

Add a half-dozen community events, a growing list of digital products and our delivery services, and the CITYVIEW division has become an important part of Big Green Umbrella Media. That is before even considering our Iowa Living magazines and our Guthrie County publication divisions.

Business landscapes change. Reader habits evolve. Technology never stops moving. Standing still is rarely an option. Growth does not guarantee success, but refusing to grow almost guarantees failure. That is why we will keep looking ahead, keep investing and keep building.

Getting bigger has never been about size alone. It is about creating something strong enough to stand the test of time.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading (and listening).

250th anniversary celebrated at Fort Des Moines

By Mike Rowley

Led by the organization efforts of Benjamin Harrington, an Eagle Scout and one of the newest members of Iowa Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, a celebration of the 250th birthday of the U.S. was held at Fort Des Moines.

Almost as if by divine intervention, the reflecting pool was filled with fresh water from heavy rains only the day before.

A tour of the museum reminded us of the important history of this place. Memories of ceremonies here were shared by Compatriot Skilton, making it possible to visualize those past formal promotion ceremonies in the rooms that housed us on this day.

Visitors of all ages donned uniforms and took photos. Ideas were discussed on how to preserve and protect this important part of our past for the next generations.
