Good morning to you!
A Daily Umbrella reader introduced me to a new term this week: gate lice. At first, I assumed it was a livestock ailment. You know, something a veterinarian would diagnose after inspecting cattle in a feedlot. Fortunately, that is not the case. At least I hope not.

Instead, gate lice are those air travelers who gather around the boarding gate long before their boarding group is called. They hover there and, in some cases, seem prepared to board the plane three days early if given the chance.

If you have flown recently, you have seen them. They create a human wall in front of the gate, making it nearly impossible for the people who are actually supposed to board to get through. It is as if the airline announced free cash instead of Group 5.

Frequent flyers have been using the term for years, and it fits. Gate lice tend to multiply quickly. One guy walks up to the gate, another joins him, then five more wander over because, well, everyone else is standing there. Before long, it looks like shoppers waiting for a Black Friday sale instead of passengers heading to Charlotte.

OK, so why do people do it? Part of the problem, I learned, is simple inexperience. Some travelers do not understand the boarding process. Others, though, know exactly how it works but are determined to secure precious overhead bin space before someone else claims it with a bag the size of a refrigerator.

Airlines have not helped. Checked bag fees encourage passengers to carry everything onboard, turning overhead bins into prime real estate. Nobody wants to discover that the only available space for their suitcase is somewhere between rows 34 and 35 while they are seated in Row 8.

There is also the psychology of crowds. When enough people start lining up, everyone else begins to wonder whether they missed an announcement. Nobody wants to be the last person sitting down if the flight is somehow leaving early.

Some airlines are fighting back. American Airlines has even tested technology that alerts gate agents when passengers try to board before their assigned group. Imagine the embarrassment. Instead of a pleasant beep, the scanner essentially announces, “Nice try. Back to the waiting area.”

Personally, I have never understood the rush. Once I am on a plane, I am still sitting in the same cramped seat with the same tiny bag of pretzels next to the same passenger who insists on reclining before takeoff.

So, the next time you fly, resist the urge to become gate lice. Stay in your seat, wait for your boarding group and stroll to the gate when it is your turn. After all, the airplane is not leaving without you, but your dignity just might.

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

Fourth of July ceremony at Fort Des Moines

On the morning of the Fourth of July, much of America will be celebrating the 250th birthday of our country. There are events of every size and shape.

Early that morning, Eagle Scout Benjamin Harrington, History Professor Doug Frazer, athletic trainer and entrepreneur Michael Donahue, fulltime father and part-time movie reviewer David Rowley, Creative Product Manager Thomas Ochylski and retired pharmaceutical sales rep and great-great-great-great-great-grandson (Mike Rowley) of one of the 41 known Revolutionary War veterans buried in Iowa will don the wool uniforms of soldiers of several eras and raise the flags at Fort Des Moines.

The public event will invite all to remember the history of those who may have been forgotten, at a place also forgotten by many, but which still holds so much tremendous local and national history.

First reactions of new visitors or those who may not have been there for decades might be unprepared for the conditions of some of the grounds. There are overgrown grass and weeds. There is chipped paint on the porch. The reflection pool clearly has seen better days. But once inside the museum, one quickly feels a great sense of pride in being an Iowan or a Des Moines descendant of those who served here.

The 9 a.m. ceremony won't be the biggest, longest or the most extravagant event of this Fourth of July. But if even a few caring, active and passionate people come and view the museum building and grounds with an eye willing to see what it once was and could be again, and if even a few are willing to give their time, expertise, and enough for needed materials, I am confident one year from now all Iowans will again point with pride at all that Fort Des Moines and the men and women who have passed through there over the years represents.

- Mike Rowley

World Cup winners and losers: group phase, food edition

Winners
Ranch dressing is the undisputed winner so far. Invented in the 1950s by Steve Henson at his California dude ranch, Hidden Valley has been favored. “It is the mother of all ranches and the undisputed gold standard for the classic, herby, and tangy profile Americans know and love,” says Serious Eats. Foreign fans, particularly Europeans, are guzzling the stuff so much that warnings have been issued by TSA to pack it in checked luggage. Hidden Valley is being courted by European grocery distributors.

Soccer-committed restaurants and bars with TVs. Tito’s, TaChido, Fong’s, Big Grove, Royal Mile, Terra Grill, Hessen Haus and particularly Mariscos El Capitan are thriving during games. The latter had two bands and no cover charge to serenade the Mexico-Czechia game. Soccer, more than other sports, is a shared experience in the most tribal sense.

Johnny Walker and Buchanan’s (Scotches) sponsored the Cup games and saw sales bumps at the expense of American Bourbon.

Losers
Wine. World Cup fans turned out to be beer drinkers, not wine so much. Tequila sales did well — World Cup sponsor Don Julio didn’t make enough World Cup edition bottles, and they are reselling at profits. However, sponsor Taittinger brought too much champagne.

Kansas City City Council. Kansas City rushed and overspent to complete a new jail just for World Cup arrests. So far, only two fans have been arrested in Kansas City, neither for felonies. The soccer hooligans of lore are too old to travel or to be violent. Their era peaked in 1990.  Trust me, I am one of them.

CENTER STAGE
Let your Spidey sense tingle

By John Busbee

Iowa Stage Theatre Company has a penchant for bringing unique programming through its play selections, and this thoughtfully developed niche of theirs gives Iowa audiences a deep dive into wonderful theatre. Samantha Hurley’s undeniably dark, comedic, brilliant script, “I’m Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire,” is their next journey into great live theatre.

Marvel at a deeper glimpse into this show.

CS: What made “I’m Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire” such an appealing show for central Iowa audiences?

ISTC: We wanted to stay true to our commitment to provide audiences with relevant stories that enlighten, entertain and inspire. This play fit the bill. It is written by Samantha Hurley, a new playwright making her name in the comedy world who originally wrote this show as a one-act and committed to its potential. Since its first production in 2023, it has been making a direct appeal to those who lived in and through the Y2K years. We are committed to classic and contemporary productions. This is one of our contemporary plays this season, which we believe will appeal to the weirder, riskier and more adventurous theater goer. This production is unlike any other this city has seen. ...
