Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, your column today has me reflecting on my own work choices, specifically the thought from your former business partner and ongoing mentor Michael Gartner stating that 20% of any job stinks (Whiskers, June 15, 2026). I’ve never had a job where I worked fewer than five days per week, so the idea of a four-day work schedule is intriguing. If it is true that 20% of any job stinks, those employees who have a four-day work week should be living their best life! I have also noticed that many schools in southern Iowa have transitioned to a four-day school week in an effort to improve both student and teacher satisfaction. There is very little cost savings, if any. Maybe this 20% rule has some merit? Of course, this is assuming that an extra day off per week actually reduces or offsets the 20% of the job that stinks. Just a thought. As always, thank you for your daily thought-provoking column.” - Kris

I have yet to find anything in life that improves by putting less effort into it. - Shane

“Your ‘more whiskers’ column reminds me of the story about the woman who approached Picasso in a restaurant, asked him to scribble something on a napkin, and said she would be happy to pay whatever he felt it was worth (Whiskers, June 15, 2026). Picasso complied and then said, ‘That will be $10,000.’ ‘But you did that in 30 seconds,’ the astonished woman replied. ‘No,’ Picasso said. ‘It has taken me 40 years to do that.’ ” - Mike

In many ways, time is money. - Shane

“Shane, I am writing about an article in the Food Dude this morning about throwing away half a can of beans (Shopping peeves, Food Dude, June 17, 2026). Never throw food away. There are too many people out there who are food-challenged. Instead, take the food to a local food distribution center. We have one at our church, New Beginnings Christian Church in Urbandale, and we would gladly take the half a can of beans.” - Paula

I believe the Food Dude was attempting to draw attention to the waste in packaging today, but you make a good point, Paula. Thank you. - Shane

“Shane, I laughed out loud when you mentioned your ‘cast iron’ swing set (The childhood swing set, June 17, 2026). We had one, too! In fact, back in 1972, my dad and uncle installed a new engine in a 1970 Road Runner. They suspended the engine from the center bar of that swing set and carefully lowered it into the car. The swing set bowed just a little under the weight, but it held strong. Believe it or not, that same swing set is now at my brother's house, where the grandchildren still play on it today. They certainly don't make them like they used to!” - Kevin

That Road Runner may be in a junkyard today, but the swing set remains strong. I love it! - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

The passing of Alan Greenspan this week resurrected his iconic quote about the stock market’s “irrational exuberance” in 1996. What elements of today’s economy seem irrationally exuberant?

Is Proctor and Gamble crazy to be pushing a new version of Tide? Tide completely dominates the detergent market despite the fact that it costs considerably more than all serious competition. It’s irrational that no one else has broken through for decades. This is detergent, not the elusive formula for synthetic chocolate. And now P&G is trying to convince their devotees that there is something better? Not sure that’s something Tide wants to encourage.

Entertainment ticket pricing. Taylor Swift proved that people would spend the equivalence of a year of mortgage payments to take their daughters to an elite showgirl concert. Now people are paying triple digit dollars for nose bleed seats to average shows and to World Cup games between insignificant teams with no stars. And this is happening at the same time that politicians on both sides of the aisle are running against an affordability crisis? All of that is irrationally exuberant.

All the all-prime steakhouses in Des Moines. Fifteen years ago, Ruth’s Chris deemed West Des Moines to be outside the demographic parameters of a place that could support their high-end prices. More recently, they built their biggest store ever (at the time, Rogers, Arkansas’ Ruth Chris is now even bigger) in West Des Moines, without subsidies that Jordan Creek Town Center offered when it was new. And then Irina’s and Prime & Providence moved in close by. And all seem to be doing quite well. The $300+ steak dinner is not just for rare and special occasions in West Des Moines. Really, things are that good in West Des Moines?

DES MOINES FORGOTTEN
Before the Saddle, there was Country Cove

By Kristian Day

Exactly two years ago, I was eagerly waiting for the premiere of “The Last American Gay Bar” at the Varsity Cinema here in Des Moines. My closest friends joined me in making this series that told the history of the gay community of this city, along with the untold story of the state’s oldest queer bar, The Blazing Saddle.

For my 39th birthday, my friend and frequent collaborator, Nick Ford, found me a copy of Drummer magazine from 1978. It was an “all men” adult magazine that had a cover story on filmmaker Wakefield Poole. Poole was a pioneer in both queer and straight XXX films, often pushing the fantasy tone more than he did the sex. ...
