Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Maybe you are too young to have seen ‘Lawrence of Arabia.’ I was too young (in retrospect) to see it in a theater in the 1960s. That quicksand scene scarred me until, well, until just now, when you revealed for the first time that the kid would not have drowned (Quicksand, June 9, 2026). If you’ve never seen the movie, it is well worth your time. (It is lengthy.) I rate it as one of the top 10 movies ever made. Oh, but there’s another scene involving a kid that scarred me a second time.” - Ann

I have not seen the entire movie. Of course, now I am intrigued. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. Your research gives me doubt Tarzan could travel across the jungle swinging on a highway of hanging vines (Quicksand, June 9, 2026).” - John

Do you know what Tarzan’s last words were? “Who greased the viiiiiiinnnnneeeee?” - Shane

“The way the small screen drilled into us that looming/impending pits of quicksand and being swallowed up was something to be wary of daily — and the reality (and lack of interactions with quicksand in everyday life) — is almost a bit of a disappointment (Quicksand, June 9, 2026). I was also convinced that the use of ‘stop drop and roll’ would be a near everyday occurrence (probably much like the duck and cover drills that happened before my time). Also, I was led to believe that I would be propositioned daily by drug dealers. Needing to ‘just say no’ certainly comes to mind with the lingering childhood beliefs as well, but it has never happened. I guess one can never be too prepared — for quicksand or otherwise.” - Mike

So… are you saying not to stop, drop and roll into quicksand while on drugs? - Shane

“Finally, news I can use (Quicksand, June 9, 2026)! No more stepping around suspicious puddles of water in the yard.” - Brad

Um, Brad, that’s not water. - Shane

“Shane, so many of your compelling articles are evergreen (Whiskers, June 15, 2026). Have you thought of gathering them into a book? We'd relish it! Today's wisdom one is a gem.” - Joy

I would, but some people think evergreen stinks. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Bridezilla 2026 warnings
GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) such as Ozempic have made lots of food news the last few years. After all, when a drug cuts one’s appetite, one eats differently and usually healthier. Now Wall Street Journal’s Jennifer Williams has discovered a second generation effect of the drugs, ones that threaten retail clothiers as much as the direct effects of junk food.

She found that people on GLP-1s are losing weight so quickly that they are overwhelming clothing stores with returned purchases, seeking refunds and exchanges for smaller sizes, even after the clothes have been worn. More such retailers have been closing than opening each year for the last 17 years. This could facilitate the death of the industry.

One in 10 brides arranging a wedding this year uses the drugs, with another 10% considering it, according to a survey of more than 11,500 by wedding-planning platform Zola. Some top end bridal companies make brides sign a legal waiver, acknowledging in writing that the gowns they are buying do not yet fit.

Other future brides can’t say yes to a wedding dress until much closer to their big day. That is forcing bridal stores to stock more dresses to accommodate last-minute weight fluctuations, leaving dressmakers on the hook for an increasing number of rush orders and hurried adjustments. David’s Bridal now has 400 people working full time in their alterations department.

Meet Jamie Logan
Teaching through song while building connection and creativity

By T.K. West

Jamie Logan grew up on a farm in Stuart before studying music at Simpson College. Starting around age 8, Logan’s parents made significant sacrifices to keep her and her sisters in piano lessons.

“My piano teacher, Ruth Sellers, was a deeply caring, encouraging and honest educator — even when that honesty was hard to hear — and I think I always wanted to grow up to be like her,” Logan says.

After college, Logan began her teaching career at the Nodaway Valley Community School District. When she and her husband began considering where to build a life and raise a family, she says the Southeast Polk Community School District felt like the perfect fit. ...
