Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Thanks for adhering to standards, Shane, but the Associated Press is not simply ‘keep[ing] it clean.’ There is a legitimate grammatical reason why there should be no apostrophe in farmers market (Publisher’s column, West Des Moines/Jordan Creek Living, May 2026). It is because an apostrophe represents possession, and the market does not belong to the farmers. As the Associated Press Stylebook elaborates, under the possessives entry, you should not use an apostrophe when a word — like farmers here — is ‘used primarily in a descriptive sense: citizens band radio, a Cincinnati Reds infielder, a teachers college, a Teamsters request, a writers guide. Memory aid: The apostrophe usually is not used if for or by rather than of would be appropriate in the longer form: a radio band for citizens, a college for teachers, a guide for writers, a request by the Teamsters.’ Or, a market by farmers. But, there's no talking sense to the Des Moines Downtown Farmers' Market, which continues to insist on being contrary.” - Tim

I’m with you, Tim. - Shane

“For one, I am delighted you took the career path you did (25 years, June 4, 2026). I can't think of a better person to be the one in charge now. Is a pleasure reading the results of your efforts.” - Margaret

You are too kind, Margaret. Thank you. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. What a great read today and reflection on your career to date (25 years, June 4, 2026). We should never forget the key people who have helped shape us to whom we are today, but, as you noted, this does not happen without a supportive family and staff. I thoroughly enjoy The Daily Umbrella, making it my must read to start my day. Your business continues to change and evolve, but the added value you continue to add to the communities you serve is something you all should be proud of. Here is to the next 25 years! - Rick

Another 25 years? The year would be 2051, and I would be turning 83 years old. Never say never, I guess. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

WDM educators rally against Hinson ahead of Iowa Senate race
By Douglas Burns

Dozens of West Des Moines educators delivered a pointed rebuke of U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, a Valley High School alumna, during a May 16 rally that served as both a public condemnation of her record and a call to action ahead of Iowa’s closely watched U.S. Senate race.

The event, organized by the newly formed advocacy group Iowans for Decency, drew nearly 250 people to the Iowa State Capitol rotunda. Speakers criticized Hinson’s voting record and public comments while promoting a letter to the eastern Iowa congresswoman published as a paid advertisement in The Des Moines Register. Organizers also signed up supporters and raised money ahead of the November general election. ...
