Good morning to you!

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has often been quoted as saying, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

Let’s start with the fact that, according to labor studies, only 80.7% of Americans are working full time. Now that we have the one in five who are not working full time out of this equation, let’s look at the percent of employees who are working and say they love what they do.

According to a 2025 article in Forbes that cited an Economist/YouGov poll, 15% of Americans with jobs said they were extremely satisfied, 35% were very satisfied, 38% were somewhat satisfied, 9% not too satisfied, and 2% not at all satisfied.

So, according to this poll, 88% of Americans with full-time work say they are at least somewhat satisfied with their jobs. Some of you may not be surprised at that percentage. Others of you are in disbelief. Your response likely depends on a number of personal and professional factors — and whether you are the employer or the employee.

My former business partner and ongoing mentor, Michael Gartner, told me many times that 20% of any job stinks, regardless of what it is. That’s one day out of every five-day workweek. If it gets to be more than 20%, he said, then it’s time to look for another job. That’s sage advice.

I have enjoyed every job I have had. Truly satisfied. Granted, I have only worked for a handful of companies in my professional career, but I had numerous jobs in my youth. Being a farm hand. Shingling houses. Working at a gas station. I certainly wasn’t the most talented worker in any of those jobs, but I learned a lot — and I had fun. In fact, those comments still ring true today.

Several years ago, I worked with a guy who was one of the most talented people I have ever known, but he never seemed to be satisfied. He once shared with me that he was fired from every job he had. Ultimately, and maybe not surprisingly, I had to fire him, too. I am guessing he polled in the 11% of unsatisfied employees, assuming he is actually working somewhere today.

So, once again, Steve Jobs was right. Our work is a large part of our lives, and the only way for us to be truly satisfied is to do great work and love what we do. What do we have to lose?

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

FROM KCCI: Des Moines T-shirt store Raygun settles deceptive pricing lawsuit. Raygun, a popular T-shirt store in Des Moines, has settled a consumer protection lawsuit filed by the Washington, D.C., group Institute for Truth in Marketing, or ITM, over alleged violations of local law. ITM claimed Raygun tricked customers into thinking they were getting a deal on products by showing inflated "original" prices next to discounted sale prices. The group alleged that Raygun never sold the items at the original price, which it said violated a D.C. law. ... READ MORE

Tuesday Touts

"The Hardest Working Still in America” has been laid-off. It can churn out a barrel of Jim Beam whiskey roughly every 93 seconds, but over supplies, mostly blamed on post COVID drinking cutbacks, particularly by Gen Z, have shut it down until at least 2027.

After peaking in 2022 at 31.2 million nine-liter cases, consumption of American whiskey — including bourbon, Tennessee whiskey, rye and single malts — has slowed to about 30 million nine-liter cases sold in 2025.

Kentucky is sitting on the equivalent of around 300 million cases, according to the Kentucky Distillers’ Association. That’s the largest reserve ever, enough to last as much as 10 years, according to industry estimates. Jim Beam dominates the Bourbon section at Fareway and all versions are on sale at Fareway as pictured.

Jason’s Deli has a World Cup special going for customers who register in their loyalty program by today. Then they offer free strawberry shortcake after the U.S. scores its first goal, a free cup of soup after the U.S. scores its third goal and a free sandwich after the fifth,  plus bonus club reward points after the even numbered goals. They claim this could add up to over $10 million in giveaways. Maybe not though. The U.S. has scored a total of three goals in the last two World Cups combined.
