Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Thanks, Shane, for a good trip down memory lane with a visit to O.B. Laing Middle School P. E. class in the early 1980s (Thank you, Mrs. Claude, May 19, 2026). Your description was perfect.” - Liz

There are some things I just can’t forget — like my junior high gym locker combination. Good to hear from you, Liz. - Shane

“I would encourage readers to visit ‘In Flanders Field the Poppies Grow’ Exhibit (The poppy, May 21, 2026). There are 225 quilts selected for this themed display. The show runs through July 5, 2026. Iowa Quilt Museum, 68 E. Court Ave., Winterset, IA.” - Karen

Sounds like a good day trip. Thanks, Karen. - Shane

“As a young Girl Scout, I sold poppies for Memorial Day (I think called Decoration Day then?) on my hometown northern Iowa downtown street (The poppy, May 21, 2026). It was a good learning experience for what the poppy represented. I was never ignored by anyone I approached, and I sold out fast.” - Margaret

Who could say no to you, Margaret? - Shane

“Loved your blanket column (The security blanket, May 26, 2026). It gave me a good laugh — and made me feel a little less ridiculous about my own blanket habit. My husband has looked at me more than once and said, incredulously, ‘You can’t possibly be cold.’ And he’s right — it is never about the temperature! There’s just something about wrapping up in a blanket that feels comforting. Thanks for the fun read — and for reminding me I’m in very good company.” - Lee

Well, we all seem to get wrapped up in something. It might as well be a blanket. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Hardee himself claimed that, in 1963, he engaged in drinks and poker with his business partners Jim Gardner and Leonard Rawls after their company went public.
