Good morning to you!

If Linus can have his blanket, why can’t I? Well, I can. And I do. Several, in fact.

The Linus I’m referencing is Linus Van Pelt, the fictional character in Charles Schulz’s comic strip “Peanuts.” Charlie Brown’s best friend first appeared on Sept. 19, 1952. He spoke his first words in 1954, the same year he was first seen with that infamous security blanket.

Charles Schulz said of him, “Linus, my serious side, is the house intellectual, bright, well-informed, which, I suppose, may contribute to his feelings of insecurity.” Suddenly, my self-comparison doesn’t feel quite so flattering.

Lee Mendelson, producer of most “Peanuts” television specials, called Linus his favorite character: “He made sucking your thumb and holding a security blanket OK. I think he’s one of the most original fictional characters of all time — blending childish behavior with great wisdom.” That sounds better. I think.

I don’t carry a blanket around with me, but I do wrap myself in one most nights. Not just in bed, either. My wife and I have blankets scattered around the living room. Fall, winter, spring, summer. It doesn’t matter. If we are sitting, there is probably a blanket involved. And, no, it is not a cuddling thing. She has hers. I have mine.

I blame this whole blanket situation on Jolene. My mom didn’t keep blankets lying around when I was growing up. My siblings and I were warm-blooded kids. I rarely wore sweaters, and socks were optional at best. Who needed a blanket? Apparently, 57-year-old me does.

I have a quilted blanket my mother made for my high school bed. Another is a T-shirt quilt my daughter Abby made from old wrestling shirts. We’ve got a few Iowa State throws, two soft white ones, and a rotating cast of others that have found their way into the house over the years. Seriously, how many blankets do two empty-nesters need?

Now I rarely sit down on the couch without grabbing one first. It’s an odd habit, maybe, but it works. It makes me feel warm, relaxed and maybe even a little secure. Maybe.

If Linus Van Pelt can survive childhood, existential dread and Charlie Brown’s entire social circle with nothing but a blue blanket, then I figure I am in pretty good company.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

A heart for service
Chapman finds purpose in quiet acts of care.

By Lindsey Giardino

Karen Chapman is one of three coordinators for the Norwalk Area Food Pantry. In her role, she is responsible for ordering food, creating weekly distribution lists, completing weekly and monthly reports and communicating with volunteers.

Through the pantry, Chapman and many other volunteers help provide food each week to families and individuals in need. The work requires organization, consistency and a strong network of volunteers committed to showing up week after week.

In addition to her work at the pantry, Chapman also volunteers at her church by making bread for communion, helping in the media room each week, and preparing meals to go with a women’s group for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Together, these efforts reflect her ongoing commitment to serving others in both structured and behind-the-scenes ways. ...

FROM ESPN: Knicks sweep Cavs, return to NBA Finals for 1st time since 1999. The New York Knicks have built a habit that's seemingly hard to follow in these playoffs, yet they do it with ease: Take over a road arena, clear out a road arena, advance to the next round after a dominant performance. They repeated that formula to clinch the Eastern Conference with a 130-93 Game 4 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night, completing a four-game sweep and advancing to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. ... READ MORE
