Good morning to you!

Fresh rain. Green grass. Sprouting flowers. Spring is Earth’s annual glow-up, unfolding before our eyes — and clogging our noses. I love it. Mostly. Unfortunately, spring does brings allergies. Lots of them.

According to various reports, about one in four Americans suffer from seasonal allergies. That’s roughly 50 million people. Frankly, that number seems low. Based on the sneezing, sniffling and eye-rubbing I witness every spring, I would put the number closer to “everyone with a pulse.”

And allergies aren’t just annoying. They are expensive. The average American household spends nearly $58 annually on allergy medications, usually spread across several purchases. In America, when something goes wrong, our first instinct is often: “There’s probably a pill for that.” And, to be fair, sometimes there is.

It took me a decade to admit I had seasonal allergies. Sure, I had the classic symptoms — red eyes, sneezing, congestion — but I also dealt with body aches every spring. Doctors poked and prodded me with no clear answers. One blamed early arthritis flare-ups caused by inflammation. Another said allergies and arthritis had nothing to do with each other. A third insisted allergy inflammation absolutely could trigger joint pain. I am siding with Doctor No. 3, mostly because my shoulders and hips apparently forecast pollen levels better than the Weather Channel.

I am also convinced we spend too much time sealed indoors — in air conditioning at home, at work and in our vehicles. Previous generations lived outside far more than we do. Our bodies were probably meant to handle a little pollen, dust and fresh air without reacting like they had been hit with military-grade pepper spray.

And, let’s be honest, the air, water and soil aren’t exactly getting cleaner. That affects what we breathe, drink and eat. Can our bodies adapt? Maybe. Humans are living longer than previous generations, after all — though some of us are doing it while sneezing 14 times in a row.

There is plenty of blame to go around, but as the old saying goes, when you point one finger, you have three pointing back at yourself. And one is probably reaching for a tissue.

So, I take my allergy pills and spend as much time outside as I can. I enjoy watching the grass grow. I like feeling rain on my face. I stop to smell the roses. Then I rub my eyes, sneeze violently and complain about my aching joints.

Welcome to springtime in Iowa.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
When Delmonico’s of New York City first opened around the corner from Wall Street in 1837, it coincided with a financial panic, bank failures and the popping of a real-estate bubble. But the steakhouse survived to serve Abe Lincoln, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. The restaurant has cycled through several locations and ownership changes, but it has been located for most of its history in the heart of New York City’s financial district. Now, nearly two centuries later, the restaurant that calls itself the first fine-dining spot in the U.S. is poised to open its second outpost in Midtown Manhattan next year.  (Wall Street Journal)

Wells restores a barn-find classic
Restored Oldsmobile turns heads and brings family together.

By Rachel Harrington

Evan Wells is a car enthusiast and collector who can often be found working on one vehicle or another, whether for work or for pleasure. One car — a pink 1963 Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday — stands out as his nicest and most photogenic project.

“I do a lot of custom vehicles — anything that tickles my fancy,” Wells says. “I had a lowered, rat rod-style F-150 truck. It was rusty, loud and obnoxious, and the rest of my family didn’t like riding in it. I had built it myself, but I hardly ever drove it, so I listed it on Facebook Marketplace. A guy in eastern Iowa offered to trade the Oldsmobile for my truck.”

Wells took the deal and became the owner of the car two winters ago.

He has spent the past year fixing up the Oldsmobile. The car was in pieces when he got it and had originally been a “barn find” in Arizona before making its way to Minnesota and eventually to the previous owner. ...

FROM ESPN: Knicks flip script, exploit James Harden to spark Game 1 rally. It wasn't quite a matter of pettiness, but the Knicks found their idea for an improbable comeback thanks to the Cavaliers trying to exploit Jalen Brunson on defense. Trailing by 22 points with 8:19 left in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Knicks had Brunson go at James Harden. The result was a 44-11 flurry by New York in the fourth quarter and overtime to complete one of the greatest comebacks in NBA history with a 115-104 victory. ... READ MORE
