Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“AI has been with us for decades (How we use Artificial Intelligence, May 11, 2026). It is obvious everywhere. Examples: The guy pushing on a door that says ‘Pull.’ The car going down the highway for miles with a turn signal on. The person in the 10 items line at the store with two carts. The lady driving through an intersection just after the light turns red. The motorcycle rider with a child in front of him on the seat. I am sure there are countless other examples with which your readers are familiar.” - Chuck

Unfortunately, much of that hits home personally, Chuck. - Shane

“I can't believe vacuum isn't in the list (Spelling errors, May 12, 2026). I have to look it up or wait for spell check to fix it, every time. Including this time.” - Susan

Vacuum? Two c’s, I assume? You would have been publicly escorted out of the spelling bee competition alongside me. - Shane

“People are still actually try to spell things right (Spelling errors, May 12, 2026)?” - Brad

Right. I mean write. Or rite? - Shane

“(Spelling errors, May 12, 2026). A sheriff's story: Victim found canceled. Body was gray. A receipt in the victim's pocket was a congratulations note received for approval to try an experimental Rx to treat pneumonia. Supervisor's comment. Your report with dictionary precision is appreciated and on schedule.” - Mike

You clearly had some extra time on your hands this morning, Mike. Good work. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. Don't forget maintenance, restaurant and February. Personally, I spell cancelled with two L's. LOL!” - Kim

Me, too. Oh, well. Could be worse. “I shot the sheriff… but I did not shoot no deputy.” - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FROM KCCI: Iowa farm owner relieved by CO2 pipeline route change but vows to keep fighting. A proposed carbon capture pipeline in Iowa has shifted its route, sparing some landowners while leaving others still in its path. Cynthia Hansen, a farm owner in Shelby County, said her century-old family farm appears to be saved after Summit Carbon Solutions announced Wednesday that it would remove eight counties from the pipeline’s path. ... An Ankeny couple has been accused of providing alcohol to someone underage and then sexually assaulting them. The Polk County Inmate Roster states 53-year-old Chad Thomas Biddle and 40-year-old Shannon Nicole Biddle, of Ankeny, were arrested on Wednesday on one count of 3rd Degree Sexual Abuse, a Class C Felony, each. ... FROM WOI: Iowa board upholds suspension for student behind deepfake videos of teachers. The Iowa State Board of Education voted Thursday that a girl who posted deepfake videos of her teachers at the beginning of the school year cannot have her year-long suspension appealed. Teachers and administrators at North Polk Community School District say the case left a devastating impact on the community. Documents show that the assistant principal noticed that staff’s emotions ranged from demoralized to sad and angry. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE WORLD: Trump, Xi wrap up summit claiming progress stabilizing US-China relations but differences persist. FROM AROUND THE NATION: Democrats test a new red state strategy: Back independents over their own nominees. Democratic leaders, desperate to compete in red states where their party brand is toxic, are embracing something new this midterm season: not backing Democrats. In states like Nebraska and Alaska, Democratic officials are, in some cases, looking past their own party’s candidates while subtly encouraging — or even openly promoting — independent candidates they hope can outperform the Democratic label. The Democratic National Committee and some of its allies in Washington are quietly supporting the new strategy. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE STATE: Body discovered in Clear Lake, death investigation underway. The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office says a death investigation is underway after a body was discovered in Clear Lake in northern Iowa on Wednesday afternoon. We are not making this up...
McDonald's New Zealand launched the “McMullet,” a cheeseburger with an extra slice of cheese placed so it hangs out the back of the bun. The result is a burger that mirrors the mullet haircut: neat in the front, messy in the back. The company picked this up from a social media suggestion and ran with it.

NASCAR’s Martinsville Speedway still sells chili cheese dogs for $2, unchanged for decades.

NJ Transit round-trip rail tickets from New York’s Penn Station to MetLife Stadium for 2026 World Cup matches will cost $105. That was reduced from an initial $150 plan, following sponsor support. This usual fare is $12.90 round-trip but New Jersey saw the World Cup as a chance to fleece tourists. MetLife Stadium cooperated by closing down its parking lot for World Cup games alone, so that the train is the only reasonable way to get to the games.

Clarification
In our Tuesday Tout of Oak Park Pastry Chef Jess Robertson, we wrote about her creations being featured in a store planned on Ingersoll a half block west of Oak Park. That store will feature Oak Park branded products, like the granola Jess makes. Anything more than that was speculation on our behalf. Further plans are still undecided.

FRESH FINDS
Local vendors bring flavor, passion and community to farmers markets.

By Rachel Harrington

Longer days and warmer nights can only mean one thing — farmers market season is back. With fresh-picked produce, handcrafted goods and sweet treats, the market is a weekly gathering place for both vendors and visitors.

Cultivating community
Clint and Kelli Eshelman started Cedar Shake Farm around 2018. As it grew, they decided to try the Madison County Farmers Market, noting the $100 participation fee made it an easy entry point. They offered visitors a variety of vegetables, fruits and flowers.

“I feel like we’ve grown everything,” Clint Eshelman says. ...
