Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Your column today about ‘urgent curiosity’ and needing to release ourselves to such impulsive yearnings is a rekindling of the inner child still residing in each of us, an unfiltered charge into some new, invigorating and trail-blazing (Opening doors, May 5, 2026). It can be a challenge, as adults have a strong tendency to stay in their lanes. Once in a while, it's exhilarating to veer off the path and four-wheel through a stretch of life. Thanks for your thought-provoking offerings, Shane.” - John B.

The trick is in choosing the right door to open. I can’t help but think of Monty Hall on “Let’s Make a Deal.” Door No. 1, Door No. 2 or Door No. 3? - Shane

“I enjoyed your recent article on the history of bottle caps (Figgy Fizz, May 4, 2026). I wonder if you are aware of another use for them that I'm sure Bert and Ernie hadn't considered? When I was much younger, I would collect the metal caps that came from glass bottles of pop. With a screwdriver, I would remove the cork inside the cap, careful so the screwdriver wouldn't slip and impale my hand. Then, I would place the bottle caps, with the jagged edges facing up, as close together as possible and nail them to a piece of plywood. This would create a very effective door mat for scraping the mud and dirt off your shoes before you came in from outdoors. Perhaps I should have gotten a patent?” - Bob

Bob’s boot scrubber! I love it! - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. I experienced the conversion of police radios from low band to high band frequency (Failed inventions, May 7, 2026). Don't ask me to explain it, but I can report how it improved reception of ‘skip’ so that instead of listening when the condition were favorable to the City of Dallas garbage trucks on 1 channel, we got to listen to 16 channels including Illinois and Wisconsin police. I might not be able to talk to a patrol car 5 miles away, but I knew what the Illinois State Police were doing on the south side of Chicago.” - John

A more worldly approach, clearly. - Shane

“Just think of the sheriff playing a guitar riff, and you'll never mess it up again (Spelling errors, May 12, 2026).

That sounds like wishful thinking, but I will give it a try. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

FROM KCCI: Madison County Board of Supervisors shoots down proposed gun range. Scott Henderson moved to Winterset 26 years ago for peace and quiet. "We love our place. We've grown to love the neighborhood and neighbors as well," He told KCCI. But he says that peace and quiet would vanish if a gun range is allowed to move in nearby. "I don't think it's a very neighborly proposal," he added. That proposed gun range is called The Vanguard. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE NATION: Some parents don’t want their kids to use tech at school. But districts are pushing back. For high school senior Aliyah Pack, getting distracted during school is the norm. FRESH FINDS
Local vendors bring flavor, passion and community to farmers markets.

By Ashley Rullestad

Longer days and warmer nights can only mean one thing — farmers market season is back. With fresh-picked produce, handcrafted goods and sweet treats, the market is a weekly gathering place for both vendors and visitors.

Johnston Farmers Market
As the weather warms, it is almost time for the kickoff of the Johnston Farmers Market at The Yard. The market started 35 years ago with only 10 vendors and now features more than 50 throughout the season.

"The Johnston Garden Club, led by Mary Jane Paez, started the market with the help of ISU landscape design students in 1989,” Molly Moore, the city’s recreation coordinator, says. “Back then, garden club volunteers ran the market throughout the season. The market was later passed to the Johnston Lions Club, which managed it until 2022, when the city took over.” ...
