Good morning to you!

It was 1979 when I competed in a spelling contest during my hometown’s sesquicentennial celebration — which, by the way, is a cruel word to include in any spelling contest. Fortunately, that was not the word that took me down. No, my downfall was sheriff.

Sheriff. Two f’s. One r. A word found on kindergarten worksheets and county patrol cars. And, somehow, under the bright lights and unbearable pressure facing this terrified 10-year-old, I added an extra r and got myself publicly escorted out of the competition.

Maybe it was stage fright. Maybe I was intimidated by law enforcement. Difficult to say. But, regardless, I was eliminated.

Apparently, I’m not alone in struggling with the spelling of sheriff. But, surprisingly, sheriff didn’t make the top 10 words Iowans most often search how to spell. The word that did top the list? Canceled. This feels appropriate, because that is exactly what happened to me after I butchered sheriff.

Of course, there are many ways to determine the most misspelled words, but the study I am referring to was completed by language learning platform Mondly and analyzed Google search data for 382 words over the past 12 months to determine which words had the most spelling searches in each state and America overall.

Canceled claimed the top spot in Iowa, likely because Americans use one “l,” while much of the rest of the English-speaking world uses two. Clearly, the English language remains deeply committed to chaos.

Second was gray, thanks to the eternal gray-versus-grey debate. Receipt landed third, as silent letters apparently build character. Then came congratulations, received, pneumonia, dictionary, appreciate, schedule and license. Nationally, the list was nearly identical, except niece snuck in — another word clearly designed by someone who hated children and phonics equally.

Still, no sheriff.

Honestly, this stings a little, as I have carried this spelling trauma for decades. But somewhere out there tonight is another nervous 10-year-old standing on a stage, palms sweating, silently praying the next word is not receipt, pneumonia… or sheriff. Kid, if you’re reading this, it is sheriff. One r. Trust me. I learned the hard way.

Have a thoughtful Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

Tuesday touts
Contrary to popular opinion, Central Iowa did not get shut out of James Beard Award finalists this year. Hannah Agran of Midwest Living is in the final three for the MFK Fisher Distinguished Writing Award, which "recognizes a single article of exceptional literary merit on the subject of food and/or drink published in any medium." That's the biggest trophy in food and travel writing to our mind. Agran also headed the team at Midwest Living that won last year's Society of American Travel Writers' gold medal for best travel writing. To paraphrase Jack Kerouac, "The most interesting food and travel writers in the world live in Des Moines."

Oak Park is expanding its footprint but not as previously planned. Owner Kathy Fehrman bought a building half a block west of the Ingersoll restaurant planning to transform it into a breakfast/lunch place. Then Connor Delaney of White Oak Realty sold her the property immediately west of Oak Park. Now Fehrman says that location will house the breakfast cafe and the other building will become a retail outlet to feature Oak Park pastry chef Jess Robertson's marvelous treats plus produce from farmers who supply Oak Park. One of Jess' cakes fetched $900 in an auction to support Drake's basketball programs.

CELEBRATING HERITAGE
Residents reflect on the traditions that connect them to home.

By Jackie Wilson

From traditional dance and cultural celebrations to food and storytelling, residents across central Iowa are finding meaningful ways to preserve and share their heritage. For many, these traditions not only honor the past but also help build community and connection for future generations.

Dancing to honor heritage
Sophea Munguia counts dance steps to the beat, instructing a pair of young students as their dance shoes clack on the floor. The next pair of students moves easily to the rhythm, then the class repeats the steps again and again.

The dance classes, called Danza Folklórica del Oeste, are taught by Sophea, a 17-year-old from Waukee and a recent high school graduate. She began teaching three years ago. Her mother, Mariana Gil Gomez, leads the group. They formed the dance troupe as a way to honor their Mexican heritage. ...
