Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“When my daughter was little and we would come across clothing or other items on the floor in a store or trash along the path we walked, I would pick them up and put them in the appropriate place and tell her to do the same (Littering lessons, April 29, 2026). Her first response was, ‘I didn’t knock it off/drop it.’ I would tell her, ‘That’s OK. We’re going to leave the world a better place than we found it.’ To this day, we both continue the practice, and she is beginning to teach her children the same. A small effort on our part to respect the world around us.” - Judy

Thank you, Judy. We could use a lot more of that today. - Shane

“I read about your list of unwritten rules (All these rules, April 30, 2026). I grew up on a farm, but as a teenager, my dad would give us a curfew of midnight. His response was always, ‘Nothing good happens after midnight.’ I have relayed this to my husband, who is a former cop, and he totally agrees with my dad.” - Sharon

Most adults agree with that statement, too. Kids? Not so much. - Shane

“Growing up in Omaha, I drank more than my share of Falstaff beer (Bottle caps, May 4, 2026). I don't remember the games. I guess I was more interested in the contents of the bottle.” - JW

I had to do a little research to be sure I had this correct. And I did, according to these notes from worthpoint.com: “Falstaff beer bottle caps were known for their collectible nature, particularly because they often featured puzzles and games. … This unique aspect of the caps was designed to engage drinkers and enhance their overall experience. … The caps became sought after by collectors due to their unique designs and the puzzles they contained. … The incorporation of games and puzzles into their caps was a way to differentiate their product in a competitive industry.” Cheers! - Shane

“Great column today about Cal and keeping that youthful fearlessness that fuels the enthusiasm to explore opportunities (Opening doors, May 5, 2026). Perfect message to start my week. Thanks.” - Loren

We all could use some of that youthful fearlessness from time to time. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FROM KCCI: Former Gov. Terry Branstad takes a ride on Iowa highway dedicated in his honor. The longest-serving governor in American history took a trip home Thursday — a road trip with his buddies to see, for the first time, the Iowa highway dedicated in his honor. Last December, former Gov. Terry Branstad was honored with the Iowa Award, the state's highest citizen honor. At that time, the state also dedicated a 36-mile section of Highway 9 through his hometown of Leland in his name. ... READ MORE

FROM WHO-TV: Judge allows search of Kristin Ramsey’s cellphone in Ashley Okland murder case. An official ruling has been made in the Kristin Ramsey murder trial regarding an issue that attorneys on both sides have debated over for weeks. Ramsey’s legal team had filed a motion to quash a search warrant for her recent cell phone data, arguing there was privileged information on the device, such as sensitive communications with her attorney, medical records and private conversations with her husband. ... FROM AROUND THE NATION: Cyberattack hits Canvas system used by thousands of schools as finals loom. A system that thousands of schools and universities use was offline Thursday during a cyberattack, creating chaos as students tried to study for finals and underscoring education’s dependence on technology. The hacking group named ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the breach at Canvas, said Luke Connolly, a threat analyst at the cybersecurity firm Emisoft. Instructure, the company behind Canvas, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment or questions about whether the system was taken down as a precaution or because the hackers knocked it offline. ... READ MORE

Food stamp Ferraris
The Foundation for Government Accountability found that 14,000 luxury vehicles were linked to food stamp enrollees. The analysis provided a handful of specific examples. A 2020 Rolls-Royce valued at $346,000 was owned by a university professor collecting food stamps. Another recipient, identified as a “celebrity barber,” drove a 2018 Lamborghini Huracán LP580-2 Spyder valued at $220,000. A professional football player collecting benefits owned a 2022 BMW M760i valued at $158,000, the analysis found. The inventory of luxe cars tied to food stamp recipients includes: three Bentleys; 3,636 Lexuses, 1,914 BMWs; 1,131 Cadillacs; 3 Ferraris; and 11 Lamborghinis.

A preliminary review of that data by the USDA found more than 300,000 instances of potentially deceased individuals enrolled in SNAP. So far, 29 states, most of them Republican-led, have complied and turned over data. The rest, all Democratic-led states, have blocked the USDA from accessing the data.

What loophole allows this? “States use Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) dollars to print a pamphlet or set up a hotline with information about welfare benefits. They then deem these offerings a "TANF benefit," which makes anyone receiving the welfare brochure or hotline number ’categorically eligible’ for food stamps,” (Foundation for Government Accountability).

CELEBRATING HERITAGE
Residents reflect on the traditions that connect them to home.

By Rachel Harrington

In Bondurant, history isn’t just found in records — it lives in families. For some residents, connections to the community span five, six or even seven generations, linking past and present through shared traditions, work and service.

A family legacy of hard work
For nearly a century, Jan Lewis Cummings’ family has lived in and around Bondurant.
Oscar and Jennie Runyan grew up in Mason City, Nebraska, and later moved to Colfax, Iowa. In the 1930s, Cummings’ grandparents moved to Bondurant from Colfax, where Oscar had served as town marshal. By then, their children were grown, and most lived in Bondurant or the surrounding countryside. ...
