Good morning to you!

My toddler grandson, Cal, recently discovered he can open doors. This is adorable for about 12 seconds. I watched him do it repeatedly this past weekend at our house. Opening interior doors? Harmless. Even cute. Opening the front door? That is concerning.

Not for Cal, though. He swings the door open and freezes in amazement at the great outdoors, his eyes the size of golf balls. He gives me a quick glance, and then he is gone. Full sprint. Olympic trials. I am behind him like a much older, much less qualified competitor.

After about the 12th jailbreak, I realized he can’t reach the deadbolt. Ladies and gentlemen, I discovered a security system, at least for another year or so.

But really, can you blame the little guy? Imagine being that age and suddenly discovering an entirely new world. Trees. Birds. Wind. Sun. Fresh air. It is basically a live-action nature documentary, and Cal is the star. Of course, Cal is running outside. Meanwhile, the rest of us are like, “Nah, I’ll just stay in and scroll.”

Watching Cal got me thinking, what if we approached life like that? Same curiosity. Same urgency. Same willingness to fling open a door and just see what is out there. Not literal doors but new skills, hobbies, interests. New people. New places. New experiences. Because, if we are being honest, most of us are creatures of habit. We wake up at the same time, eat the same foods, talk to the same people. We love our routines. “Don’t move my cheese,” as the book says.

But what if we did open a few new doors? What if I learned to play guitar? Took a trip to Ireland? Tried Thai food? OK, let’s not get reckless. Two out of three feels responsible.

Look, I like my routines. They help me function. Better sleep. More productivity. Predictable everything. There is comfort in knowing how my day — and my digestive system — is going to go. But if a toddler can charge into the unknown with zero hesitation, what is stopping me?

The answer is fear. Obviously. Cal doesn’t have it, at least not for the first 30 seconds. The rest of us have years of life experience whispering, “This could go poorly.” And, sometimes it is right. But, sometimes it just keeps us stuck.

So, this week, I’m taking a page from Cal’s playbook. I’m going to open some new doors. Not the front door. We have covered that. But somewhere out there are a few unopened opportunities with my name on them. And when I find them, I hope I have just enough of Cal’s courage — and maybe a little less of his sprint speed. I also hope he inspires you to open a few doors of your own, too.

You may want to consider a personal deadbolt, though. Just in case.

Have a thoughtful Tuesday, and thank you for reading..

FROM WHO-TV: CIWW says lawn watering ban likely due to high nitrate levels. Officials with Central Iowa Water Works said a ban on lawn watering may be likely this year. During a press conference on Monday held at the Maffitt Reservoir, CIWW provided an update on the current water quality conditions. Officials said nitrate levels remain high in the Racoon River and its nitrate removal facility has been running consistently since January. Due to the high levels, CIWW has been mixing water from the Racoon River with water from Maffitt Reservoir to lower nitrate levels, and, as a result, officials said the reservoir is currently about 5.5 feet lower than normal. ... FROM AROUND THE WORLD: US attempt to open Strait of Hormuz tests fragile Iran war ceasefire. The Iran war risked reigniting after the U.S. tried to force open the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping, though a ceasefire seemed to be holding Tuesday even after the United Arab Emirates said Iran fired missiles and drones at it. It is unclear what will follow after an American attempt to end Iran’s stranglehold on the strait by creating an “enhanced security area.” A prominent Iranian official accused the U.S. of undermining regional security with the effort and warned that Iran will respond. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE NATION: Restaurants celebrate authentic Mexican culture and history this Cinco de Mayo. Nayomie Mendoza has become accustomed to how Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the U.S.: the platters of tacos, the pitchers of margaritas and the jubilant sounds of mariachi bands. She is among a number of Mexican American business owners who’ve become more vocal about also honoring Mexican history and the significance of the holiday, as a way to combat anti-immigrant sentiments amid heightened immigration enforcement efforts that have targeted Latino communities. ... READ MORE

Tuesday touts

Harbinger celebrated their ninth anniversary in April with a nine-course dinner for $99. Des Moines dining is constantly renewing itself. Oak Park and Masao have been fabulous additions to the scene. But when it comes to invention, Joe Tripp and his staff at Harbinger have no Iowa peers. All nine courses were exquisite and all were completely new to me. Some of the foods, like aiyu jelly were previously unknown to me. Here are three:

Wild sea scallop, white shoyu, daikon pickled in kumquat oil and kumquat vermouth.

Prawns wrapped and fried in tofu skin.

Chilled aiyu jelly made from smuggled creeping fig seeds.

Other courses featured original recipes of ramp pockets, halibut, duck breast, milk tea gelato, chicken consommé, and oyster mushrooms. Harbinger would be a top restaurant in any city. Every day of the week, they offer happy hour prices with six dishes at $8, three buns at $3 and a ramen of the week for $15. That's our Wonder Bargain of the Week.

CELEBRATING HERITAGE
Residents reflect on the traditions that connect them to home.

By Ashley Rullestad

The stories that define Grimes stretch far beyond city limits — and centuries into the past. Whether tracing lineage back to the Revolutionary War, carrying traditions from Italy or Ukraine, or navigating life between cultures, residents are keeping their heritage alive in meaningful, everyday ways.

Revolutionary ties
Stefanie Wager has done extensive research on her family history. Her family has been in Grimes since the 1880s, and she is a member of the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter.

“I have even found letters my Revolutionary War ancestor exchanged with John Adams,” she says. “I've always loved history. I'm a former social studies teacher and have always been fascinated by the people who have come before us and how they lived.” ...
