Good morning to you!

If you are still searching for the cap of a 12-ounce bottle of Figgy Fizz, this column is for you. If you have no idea what I am talking about from “Sesame Street,” you are not alone. Ernie didn’t find it very interesting, either. But for whatever reason, Bert’s bottle cap obsession lodged itself in my brain and never left.

Bottle caps may be the most underappreciated invention of all time. These little metal and plastic overachievers have been quietly saving our drinks from going flat for decades. They have also, maybe more importantly, prevented us from drinking bugs.

The bottle cap’s origin story began in 1892 when William Painter invented the crown cork. Before that, bottles were sealed with wooden stoppers, wax and corks. Painter’s design, with its crimped edges and cork lining, locked in carbonation like a champ. It was cheap, effective and incredibly successful. He also invented the bottle opener, which feels like planning ahead at a level most of us never achieve.

Early bottle caps did their job and also accidentally became art. Brands like Coca-Cola realized the top of a bottle was prime real estate. Logos, colors and slogans turned caps into tiny billboards. Some of you may remember games printed inside Falstaff beer caps, because nothing said “family fun” like solving those puzzles.

Then came the 1960s and the twist-off cap. Screw caps and aluminum tops made life easier, and, suddenly, convenience was king. Less effort, more sipping. Beer purists complained, of course.

By the late 20th century, plastic caps took over. They were lightweight, resealable and far less likely to slice your finger open. Unfortunately, they also came with environmental baggage. That innocent little cap became public enemy No. 1, floating around oceans and starring in guilt-inducing documentaries.

Now bottle caps are working on a PR comeback of sorts. Tethered caps stay attached for recycling, and companies are experimenting with biodegradable versions that won’t outlive your great-grandchildren.

And because you were absolutely wondering, the largest bottle cap collection in the world does not belong to Bert but rather to Poul Høegh Poulsen of Denmark, who has gathered more than 101,733 different caps from 183 countries. This raises an important question: Where does one store 101,733 bottle caps?

Like many great inventions, bottle caps have had quite a journey — especially for something most of us toss away without a second thought. Unless, of course, you are still searching for the cap of a 12-ounce bottle of Figgy Fizz.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Residents reflect on the traditions that connect them to home.

By Ashley Rullestad

From lifelong residents to newcomers rediscovering their roots, Ankeny is a place where personal history and community growth are deeply intertwined. For some, family ties stretch back generations; for others, the connection is newly uncovered. Together, their stories paint a picture of a town shaped by heritage, memory and change.

Childhood memories revisited
Coleen Hildreth Myers moved to Ankeny 10 years ago because of her husband’s job.

“I told my husband I was back to my roots because I knew my grandparents on my father’s side had grown up on farms north of Ankeny, she says. “Once here, I found my great-grandparents’ graves. The Hildreths are buried in Lincoln Township Cemetery, just a few miles from where I live on Northwest 15th Street. My other grandparents, the Huttons, are buried in a cemetery northeast of Ankeny.”    ...
