Good morning to you!

Lawsuits against the Big Tech company once known as Facebook keep piling up — privacy violations, antitrust claims, data misuse. Add allegations of harm to young users and failure to protect them online, and the list grows longer.

There’s a class-action case over alleged scraping of texts and call logs. Others focus on misuse of user data and face-tagging in photos. The American Civil Liberties Union has sued over alleged gender bias in advertising. Toss in claims of inflated video metrics and accusations that Facebook undercut developers by shifting privacy rules midstream, and the pattern is clear.

It doesn’t stop there. Newspaper companies in Georgia have filed antitrust claims over digital advertising. Lawsuits tied to personality quizzes allege widespread data exposure. Trademark disputes add to the pile. Even the Federal Trade Commission has stepped in, accusing the company of illegal monopolization.

But the most troubling cases involve children. Ask a parent, teacher or police officer what social media is doing to young people. The bullying hasn’t disappeared. It has gone constant — 24/7, amplified by notifications and algorithms.

In high school classrooms, a shift is obvious. When I ask students which social media platforms they use, Facebook barely registers. In one class, just two of 25 students said they use it. For them, it’s the landline phone of social media.

Many older users, however, are seemingly all in. More than half of adults ages 50 to 64 use Facebook, along with nearly a third of those 65 and older. Some call it “Silver Surfer Syndrome” — a polite way of saying your grandmother is posting more than you.

Here’s the irony: Public dollars are still flowing into Facebook. Cities, counties and school districts continually promote themselves and their activities there. They pay for ads. They pay staff or vendors to keep content — and Facebook's personal data mining — running.

And businesses? They are still being told by some to “grow their brand” on the platform. Shop local? Hardly.

Here’s another unfortunate irony: Our company continues to use it, too. Not to enrich Mark Zuckerberg, we tell ourselves, but to drive traffic to our own websites. It’s a convenient excuse.

Maybe one day that will change. Maybe one day, when the lawsuits are settled, we’ll look back on the Facebook era and wonder what we were thinking. Then again, we already know cigarettes kill, seat belts save lives and too much alcohol leads to bad decisions. And yet, here we are.

Have a thoughtful Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

Tuesday Touts
The Latin King, now locally owned again, has been restoring things from its glorious Pigneri-Tursi days. Among the new old things are the American fries. Served in a casserole dish, these are as good as fried potatoes get — super crispy and melt in the mouth, too. Also, the fried chicken is again hand breaded and fried in real lard as ordained by the gods of Ancient Rome. Pictured are three pieces with a potato choice or vegetables, salad and courtesy bread basket $17. That's our Wonder Bargain of the Week.

For the opening of New York City's acclaimed L'Amico, Chef Laurent Tourondel tasted every olive oil he could find. He settled on Barbera's Lorenzo No. 1. We bought some on Amazon at $37. Chef Laurent says it tastes more like olives than all others. We agree.

CELEBRATING HERITAGE
Residents reflect on the traditions that connect them to home.

By Ashley Rullestad

Family history is more than names on a chart — it is a collection of stories, struggles and traditions that shape who we are. For some, those stories are discovered through travel and exploration; for others, they are passed down through generations rooted in one place. For many, their heritage offers a deeper connection to both their past and their present.

Searching for their roots
Many people feel a desire to understand where their family began — how they came to be where they are today and who came before them. The stories within a family tree and the places those ancestors lived help shape who we become. Chris and La Rae Randall say they knew little about their heritage growing up, so they created a plan that led them on a journey to discover their roots.

In 2019, they took ancestry tests to learn more about their lineage and discovered roots in several locations across Europe. ...
