Good morning to you!

There we were. It was 1982, and we were rocking out in my buddy Ian’s living room, absolutely convinced the band Van Halen had invented rock music. Then Ian’s dad walked in.

Marvin didn’t yell. He didn’t lecture. He just gave us the look adults use when confidently knowing children are wrong. He continued by stating that the songs we were blasting were “cheap imitations.” We were ready to revoke his dad card.

Then he walked over to the stereo and started dropping receipts: “Dancing in the Street” by Martha and the Vandellas. “(Oh) Pretty Woman” by Roy Orbison. “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks. Even “Ice Cream Man” by John Brim. One by one, our musical worldview crumbled. It was a long afternoon.

That was the day we learned a hard truth: That music is basically one long conversation where nobody cites their sources.

Original songs arrive with a kind of magic that is raw, weird and often imperfect. They carry whatever the artist was trying to say, whether it was heartbreak, rebellion or “let’s see what happens if we turn everything up to 10.” That first version sets the tone. It is the blueprint.

Then come the remakes.

At their best, they are shape-shifters. A folk tune becomes a rock anthem. A blues track turns into arena bombast. A quiet song gets louder and shinier with significantly more hairspray. Suddenly, a whole new audience thinks they have discovered something brand new.

At their worst, remakes are musical photocopies — slightly faded, a little off-center and completely unnecessary.

The trick is balance. Too faithful, and you wonder why it exists. Too different, and you wonder if it is even the same song. The sweet spot is when an artist respects the original but isn’t afraid to mess with it a little.

What Marvin understood — and what we eventually admitted — is that songs don’t sit still. They travel. They change hands. They pick up new meaning depending on who is playing them and when you hear them.

Which version is better? That’s not really the point. The real answer usually depends on when you first heard it — and whether someone’s dad was standing nearby, ready to ruin your afternoon with the truth.

What song remakes do you approve of? Or disapprove of? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

Allie Delaney is the owner of Renovation Jungle, a plant store that inspires unusual loyalty, love and appreciation among customers. Jake Kashuk is her husband, a skateboard lifer and contractor. We think they epitomize the ideal young professionals that Des Moines is desperately hoping to attract to town.

We asked them to lunch, and they chose Pho 888, a Vietnamese restaurant on Second Avenue’s strip mall of Vietnamese businesses. Over fried tofu, spring rolls, banh mi and lots of hot chili oil, we talked about renovation, life styles and Des Moines’ attraction. ...
