Good morning to you!

If you are an early-morning walker, you may have noticed something lately: earthworms. Not just a few. I am talking hundreds of them — sprawled across driveways, sidewalks and roads like they RSVP’d “yes” to a party no one else knew about.

I saw them last week during a morning stroll, the aftermath of a nighttime thunderstorm. Apparently, when it rains, worms don’t just come out — they commit.

Of course, they were not alone for long. A few robins had already clocked in for breakfast, hopping around like hungry diners at a greasy spoon. It was less “peaceful morning walk” and more “all-you-can-eat buffet.”

This got me thinking: How long do these creatures actually live — assuming they don’t end up as someone else’s entrée?

It turns out earthworms, the unsung heroes of soil health, can live four to eight years under the right conditions. Garden varieties get a shorter run, about one to two years. Honestly, I would have guessed about 20 minutes, given what I witnessed.

Robins, meanwhile, live about three years. That is not exactly a long retirement plan, especially considering how much time they spend tempting fate in open lawns. Their first year is the toughest. After that, their odds improve — kind of like making it past your first year of owning a treadmill.

Naturally, my brain then made the leap from worms … to robins … to cattle. As one does.

I have often wondered how long it takes for a cow in a pasture to become a hamburger on my plate. The answer: not long enough to get attached. After processing, the meat is typically aged for several days to improve tenderness, then butchered and ground. It is a surprisingly efficient system.

As for the cows themselves, they could live 15 to 20 years. But cattle raised for beef usually live just 1.5 to two years. Dairy cows get a bit longer — around four to six years — before their final curtain call.

So, on one quiet morning walk, I managed to contemplate the full circle of life: worms, robins and hamburgers. And here’s the takeaway: The early bird gets the worm… but the worm probably lived longer than the cow.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

FROM WOI: Report: Iowa's population is growing, but not fast enough. Iowa’s population continued to grow in 2025 for a third consecutive year, but a new analytical report suggests the forces driving that growth are weakening and could pose long-term challenges for the state’s workforce and economy. According to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Iowa added about 8,000 residents last year. While that reflects continued population growth, researchers with the Common Sense Institute of Iowa say a closer look at births, deaths and migration reveals a more complicated picture. ... Food TV has two new shows to watch. CNN's Eva Longoria Searching for France looks like her best food travel show yet. As usual, CNN brings production values that beat their rivals'. Longoria speaks French, married a Frenchman and brings her usual esprit de vie and wild laugh to the show. Sunday nights. Locally, CW Iowa 23's Iowa Food Diary brings youthful enthusiasm and precocious film and editing skills. It looks as good, if not better than, most PBS food shows. And it's produced, directed and stars 17 year Nash Roe. Sundays at 4:30 p.m.

CARS IN THE CITY
Porsche Cayenne Coupe is a high-performance dream

By Jackie Wilson

For my first time driving a Porsche, a wave of excitement hit me. A Porsche is “driven by dreams” and is an iconic, ultimate sports car. Yet I hesitated. The vehicle I was about to drive cost twice as much as my first house in the 1990s. Could I maintain my accident-free driving record and still enjoy a Cars in the City review?

I did. And the Porsche lived up to the hype.

First, let’s clear up how to pronounce it. Porsche is pronounced with two syllables: por-sha. It’s not pronounced like some Midwesterners who say “warsh” their hands.  ....

1930: Prisoners left to burn in Ohio fire. A fire at an Ohio prison kills 320 inmates, some of whom burn to death when they are not unlocked from their cells. It is one of the worst prison disasters in American history. The Ohio State Penitentiary was built in Columbus in 1834. Throughout its history, it had a poor reputation. A cholera epidemic swept through the facility in 1849, killing 121 convicts. In 1893, a prison superintendent wrote that "ten thousand pages of history of the Ohio Penitentiary would [not] give one idea of the inward wretchedness of its 1,900 inmates. The unwritten history is known only by God himself.” … READ MORE
