Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Good morning, Shane. A few weeks ago, I wrote you about being terrified by ‘RODAN’ (Mailbag, March 13, 2026). It was on TV recently, and I recorded it. The director and the special effects person did ‘GODZILLA’ first. Then, in 1956, they filmed ‘RODAN.’ In the first few moments, the characters were discussing global warming. The melting of ‘the ice’ would flood Earth, a character noted. This was 1956! As a 7- or 8-year-old when I saw it (it was released in 1957), I never caught the concept of global warming. The Japanese were more focused on nuclear weapons. I learned as I got older to understand their fear. A couple of useless trivia points. This production team went on to do eight more ‘GODZILLA’ films. When ‘GODZILLA’ was released in the U.S., Raymond Burr was added as an American journalist narrator. He was a recognizable actor to American audiences. His scenes were cut in to give the impression he was part of the original production.” - John

Few things scream America more than Raymond Burr. - Shane

“Greetings, Shane. I've been thinking of prank calls since you wrote about it (Prank phone calls, Monday, March 16, 2026). One might think of these pranks as the domain of pre-teen/teenage boys, but my friend C. and I had a heyday with them. Our best? We called a Des Moines Tree Nursery. The conversation went something like this:

Tree Nursery: Hello?
C. plus me: Hi! I'd like to inquire about placing my little boy in your nursery.
Nursery: [Pause.] I'm sorry. But we're a tree nursery.
C. plus me: My little boy IS a tree.

[Laughing so hard we had to hang up.] We also watched a lot of Monty Python in those years. I hope this brought a smile to your day.” - Eileen

You were clearly barking up the wrong tree. - Shane

“I used my metal roller skates to make a skateboard (Harmless fun?, April 1, 2026). Attach one or more skates to the bottom of a 2-by-6, and away you go! Great way to massage your feet. Wish I could still ride one today for that purpose … foot massage that is!” - Chuck

What could possibly go wrong in that scenario? - Shane

“Shane, I love your column, and this one especially made me laugh (Harmless fun?, April 1, 2026). I grew up with many of these. Jarts were a favorite, and thank goodness I'm still here. We think things are better, but are they really? Electric scooters? Hoverboards? Waterbeds? Trampolines? Kiddie tents? Have the ER on speed dial.” - Debbie

As long as you keep the electric scooter off the waterbed, I think you will be fine. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

POLITICAL MERCURY
‘It took a disabled man to lead a disabled nation’

By Douglas Burns

It’s head-spinning to be at once depressed and optimistic.

But there I was. Somewhere between ideation and actualization. Something pulled me back. Mostly curiosity, I think. Wanting to know what happens next, a reporter’s DNA, has gotten me through a lot. You gotta live to see tomorrow to know if you were right yesterday.

Like farmers crushed under the weight of skyrocketing interest rates, steelworkers displaced by corporate greed in the 1980s, we’d lost everything — the family business, our familial connections themselves, identity, income and purpose — as we had to give up the Carroll Daily Times Herald, the love of my life, the all-in for me, after 93 years and three generations of ownership. ...
