Good morning to you!

Audi Crooks, a star for Iowa State women’s basketball, announced last week that she will enter the transfer portal — a move that underscores a growing reality in college sports.

Crooks, a standout from my hometown of Algona, is leaving the program that recruited, developed and believed in her. The full story isn’t public, but it is difficult to ignore the influence of name, image and likeness money. For many athletes, the financial incentives are simply too significant to dismiss. That’s the reality of today’s game.

The transfer portal is reshaping more than just basketball. In college wrestling, some athletes are committing to their third — even fourth — school. At that point, it is fair to ask: What does loyalty mean in college athletics anymore? And how can coaches and teammates build trust in a constantly shifting environment?

There are valid reasons to transfer. A poor fit, a coaching conflict or a lack of opportunity can justify a fresh start. One move makes sense. But repeated transfers suggest something else — a system drifting away from its purpose.

College sports have long been about more than competition. They have been a proving ground for commitment, resilience and growth. If athletes are encouraged to leave at the first sign of adversity, what lessons are they taking with them beyond the field, court or mat?

This is not just about sports. It is about preparation for life — for careers, relationships and responsibilities that require perseverance. The explosion of NIL opportunities has accelerated this trend, turning movement into the norm rather than the exception. What was once rare is now expected.

That shift carries consequences — for programs, for teammates and, ultimately, for the athletes themselves. The transfer portal isn’t going away. But without balance, it risks eroding the very values college sports are meant to instill.

President Trump has addressed this issue. On April 3, he signed an executive order limiting college athletes to five years of eligibility and restricting transfers to one without sitting out a season. The changes take effect Aug. 1. Schools that allow ineligible athletes to compete risk losing federal funding. The policy is sensible, reasonable and enforceable — and long overdue. Let's hope the provisions of this executive order become federal law. In the meantime, expect a surge of transfers to join Crooks before Aug. 1.

Have a meaningful Monday, and thanks for reading.

Last weekend, thieves swiped 413,793 units of KitKats somewhere between a factory in central Italy and their destination in Poland. Both the chocolate bars and the truck carrying them remain missing. Though no one was hurt in the theft, Nestlé said, “We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat — but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 metric tons of our chocolate.”

Other companies soon joined in with some social-media spoofing. “We would like to share our thoughts and condolences with Kit Kat following their sad news,” Domino’s Pizza in the U.K. posted, adding, “On a completely unrelated note, we’re pleased to announce we’ll now be selling a new Kit Kat pizza.” (WSJ, Reuters)
