Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“My cat believes all twist ties are toys for him (The bread twist tie, March 24, 2026). He has a collection.” - Brad

Well, we all collect something, whether we want to or not. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. My seventh-grade social studies teacher told us his favorite thing to do on the subway was pretend he was working on the New York Time Crossword Puzzle while Columbia University students worked on theirs (Crossword people, March 30, 2026). After a few minutes, as he was approaching his station, he would give a satisfied exhale, fold his paper with an accomplished grin on his face, tuck the paper under his arm, and, moments later, leave them bewildered.” - John

This is yet another reason why we should question social studies teachers. - Shane

“I always do both of these in every edition of CITYVIEW (Crossword people, March 30, 2026). It keeps my mind working. I like to challenge myself as I am retired.” – Nichola

Try this. What’s a seven-letter word for “retired people who like to be challenged”? - Shane

“There is a newspaper in Danbury that is NOT closing (Iowa newspapers cease operations; March 31, 2026). It follows some of the items you highlighted for what a newspaper in a small town needs to survive: Local ownership. A large part of the paper is pictures of local school sporting events. A picture of your kids in the paper gets subscriptions. The paper is the Danbury Review, and it has won some awards. My sister still lives there. Of course, I grew up there and I subscribe to the paper, and my brother who lives about 1,200 miles from there also subscribes. Even though the only relative we have in school near there is a grandniece. It appears to me that some of those papers could be viable, especially the ones in the county seat cities like Ida Grove.” - George

Sounds like another newspaper I should subscribe to. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FEATURE STORY
A megachurch pilgrimage

By Joe Weeg

IN THE BEGINNING …
I wear a dark suit.

It’s my first visit to a megachurch, and it is for a funeral. It is confusing in this day and age to know what to wear to church. Your best clothes? Business casual? Shorts and a T-shirt? Got me. Back in the day, I would tell young lawyers who might ask what to wear for a court appearance … well, wear what you would to a wedding or funeral or Sunday church.

Not true anymore. It is a free-for-all when it comes to church dress. But today I wear my dark suit anyway. Listen, I’m an old dog in a sea of jeans and shorts and sweat pants. ...

FROM ESPN: Phil Mickelson to miss Masters due to family health matter. Phil Mickelson announced Thursday that he won't play in next week's Masters and will be out for an extended period as his family continues to "navigate a personal health matter." It will be the first time since 1994 that five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods and Mickelson, a three-time winner of a green jacket, both miss the first major of the season. ... FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: How the NCAA aims to tackle the surge of online abuse targeting college athletes. In a span of 6.3 seconds Sunday, Cayden Boozer’s freshman college basketball season crashed. In the minutes, hours and days that followed, the Duke guard was dragged through online hell. An unwise, heat-of-the-moment pass was deflected, which led to a UConn possession, which led to Braylon Mullins’s stunning, 35-foot shot. One man’s heroic moment became another man’s calamity, as the sharp turn of events sent UConn to the Final Four and eliminated the Blue Devils. Afterward in the Duke locker room, Boozer forthrightly answered every media question, exhibiting a level of mature accountability beyond his 18 years. ... READ MORE

FROM YAHOO SPORTS: What Raiders' Kirk Cousins deal means for Fernando Mendoza, Aaron Rodgers and NFL QB market. It’s not quite the last NFL quarterback domino this offseason, but it’s certainly doing a large part to set the rest of the league’s pieces in place for 2026. That’s how the Las Vegas Raiders’ five-year, $172 million deal with Kirk Cousins should be absorbed. Which is, in reality, a one-year $11.3 million deal from the Raiders that will also protect another $8.7 million that Cousins will get from the Atlanta Falcons this season. ... READ MORE

1860: Pony Express debuts. On April 3, 1860, the first Pony Express mail, traveling by horse and rider relay teams, simultaneously leaves St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Ten days later, on April 13, the westbound rider and mail packet completed the approximately 1,800-mile journey and arrived in Sacramento, beating the eastbound packet’s arrival in St. Joseph by two days and setting a new standard for speedy mail delivery. Although ultimately short-lived and unprofitable, the Pony Express captivated America’s imagination and helped win federal aid for a more economical overland postal system. It also contributed to the economy of the towns on its route and served the mail-service needs of the American West in the days before the telegraph or an efficient transcontinental railroad. … READ MORE

1948: President Harry Truman signs Marshall Plan. On April 3, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signs the Economic Assistance Act, which authorized the creation of a program that would help the nations of Europe recover and rebuild after the devastation wrought by World War II. Commonly known as the Marshall Plan, it aimed to stabilize Europe economically and politically so that European nations would not be tempted by the appeal of communist parties. … READ MORE
