Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hi, Shane. I enjoyed your recent column on learning to drive a stick shift (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). I took driver's training in school and passed that with no trouble. Only problem was I learned on an automatic shift. I got my license and had nothing I could drive. My folks' car was a stick shift, and the only time I tried to drive it, I almost hit the barn. Never tried that again. A few years later, I married, and my husband was patient enough to teach me how to shift. We had a 1951 Ford, which had the shift on the column, and I mastered that. My husband was only 20 when we married and hadn't completely grown up yet, so he thought he just had to have glass packs installed so the car would make this terrific loud rattling noise. So, the problem with that was they got so hot it melted the brake line, and here I am cruising along and no brakes. Talk about being scared. Boy, was I glad when that thing finally coasted to a stop. And it happened more than once. Got so I would just leave the car where it stopped, and he could figure out how to get it home. Thanks for the memories. Keep up the good work.” - Diane

So, it wasn’t your fault for running through all those stop signs? - Shane

“Shane, I couldn't narrow down what came to mind (TV catch phrases, March 10, 2026), so here's a few more: ‘Weeeell doggies’ (‘The Beverly Hillbillies’); ‘Citizens arrest,’ ‘Golly (stretched out )’; ‘Judy...Judy...Judy’ (‘The Andy Griffith Show’), ‘Sock it to me’ and ‘Vedy interesting’ (‘Laugh-in’); ‘And now, here on our show’ (‘The Ed Sullivan Show’); and, of course, ‘Hello, Newman’ ( ‘Seinfeld’).” - James

It’s good to see that I am not the only one who watched too much TV as a kid. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. There was this cruel version (Prank phone calls, Monday, March 16, 2026). Set-up required the victim having an answering machine and not being home. ‘Roger, it's Barry. That girl you talked to at the restaurant last night. When I went back to get my gloves, she asked about you. She thought you were really nice, and she said if you came by the other place she works at tomorrow night, she'd like you to take her out for coffee. 11 p.m. at… click.’ " - John

So, that was you! - Shane

“Attaboy (The mystery remote, March 19, 2026)! Problem solved. - Brad

Or, at least postponed to another day (or another person). - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

A 'FUR-EVER' HOME
Residents share stories about the animals they rescued.

By Ashley Rullestad

Abandoned. Abused. Neglected.

The world is full of animals — big and small — that don’t know the comfort of a full belly, a warm place to sleep, and the love of a caring owner. Some people seek out these needy animals when looking to add a pet to their family. Others come across them unexpectedly and are moved to rescue them. Whatever the case, rescued pets often give their humans as

FROM ESPN: Indiana's Curt Cignetti rips transfer Nick Marsh for gold cleats. Indiana's first national championship hasn't glamorized the way coach Curt Cignetti runs his program, as decorated incoming transfer Nick Marsh found out Thursday when the team kicked off spring practice.
