Good morning to you!

Take a seat. Go ahead. There is no shortage. Don’t believe me? Look around the room you are in right now. Odds are, there are far more chairs than people — maybe by a wide margin. I can see 14 from where I’m sitting, and I’m the only one home.

We’re not just surrounded by chairs. We are committed to them. You are probably sitting while reading this. If not, just give it a minute. You will find one.

We sit. A lot. In 2024, Harvard Health reported the average person spends 10.4 hours a day sitting. That’s nearly half the day planted in one spot. The rest? Sleeping, a little standing, and just scraps of actual movement. And here’s the part that should make us all stand up immediately — but won’t: Sit more than four hours a day, and your risk goes up for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. Four hours. Most of us hit that before lunch.

So what’s the solution? Quit our jobs? Become nomads? Take up competitive pacing? Not exactly. The Society of Behavioral Medicine suggests some reasonable ideas: standing desks, walking meetings, lunchtime walks, reminders to get up and move. At home, it’s more of the same — stand during TV commercials, move while doing chores, set a timer so you don’t become one with the couch. None of this is revolutionary. It’s just easy to ignore.

Michael Gartner once told me that, when he was president of NBC News, he held “standing meetings.” No chairs. “Meetings are much faster that way,” he said. Of course they are. Nobody gets comfortable enough to ramble.

My dad had his own version of this philosophy. Whenever we drove somewhere, he parked as far away as possible. I would ask, “What’s wrong with those closer spots?” He would grin. “Those are for the old people.”

Dad and I also walked to church together — extreme heat, snow, didn’t matter. It was only a few blocks, and he said it was good for us. And he was right. Mostly. The only flaw in his health plan was that he would smoke a couple of cigarettes along the way — which, in hindsight, probably canceled out the walk. Still, he had the right idea: Move when you can. Don’t take the easy spot. Don’t sit if you don’t have to. Because the chairs aren’t going anywhere. The question is: Do we have to use them quite so much?

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

A 'FUR-EVER' HOME
Residents share stories about the animals they rescued.

By Darren Tromblay

Abandoned. Abused. Neglected.

The world is full of animals — big and small — that don’t know the comfort of a full belly, a warm place to sleep, and the love of a caring owner. Some people seek out these needy animals when looking to add a pet to their family. Others come across them unexpectedly and are moved to rescue them. Whatever the case, rescued pets often give their humans as much love as they receive.

A human rescue
It was a tough time around the Sbrocco household.

The owner of two Rag Doll cats, Nancy Sbrocco, was well versed on her precious pets’ temperaments.

But, one day, she noticed something strange with Maggie, the older of the two. Maggie’s eyes had begun dilating. A couple of trips to the veterinarian yielded nothing. But, Maggie continued her downhill slide. The vet then said Maggie had a brain tumor, based on the way she was walking sideways and losing a lot of weight. ...
